I made a twin for my friend Sarah's c hurch bazzar & got out my twin batting. Made the top twin size like I wanted - roughly 72 X 90. Was batting correctly sized? Noooooo! Batting was 8 inches too short widthwise! I didn't have any extra pieces (normally I do) to add width to it. Had to use spare full size batting to finish the twin size quilt! Gonna email manufacturer & vent big time!

Not mention that I broke 1 needle & bent one working on this quilt. Really hope Sarah makes mucho moolah for it!!!

Thanks for letting me vent here. Feel better.

Gina

That's never been a problem for me. What I did have a problem with was some extra wide fabric for backing - when I prewashed it, it shrank so much that I couldn't use it for the quilt I bought it for!

All the package batting I've purcahsed is always to small so I buy by the bolt then I can cut it like I want it. I make my quilts bigger than the usual especially that the mattesses are deeper now.

Haven't purchased precut batting in a package for years now. Don't remember it ever being smaller than advertised on the package when I did use it.

I haven't bought packaged batting for several years now. I don't think that I ever measured it when I did, but what you are saying does not surprise me. I became unhappy with it when I saw very thin spots in it as well as excessive wrinkling. I had discussed it at the time with others and was told my complaints were common and that is why they buy off the roll--or buy whole roll. The packaging process seems to increase the chance of distortion although some manufactures are better than others.

Prewashing: Remember the amount of shrinkage is based on a % of the entire piece. When you are talking about something around 100 inches to begin with--5% is 5 inches! To us quilters, 5 inches adds up fast! Some of those backing fabrics shrink more than 5%. On the end of the bolt, that kind of information is usually given. The last backing fabric I bought shrunk 6 inches when I prewashed it. I was glad that I did wash it--it "thickened" up nicely after washing!

I stopped buying the packaged batting because of the wrinkling issue as well. I never noticed the size differential but then I typically only bought full-size or larger and cut it down. I buy a large chunk off the bolt when it is on sale now.

I've always bought the prepackaged & never had a problem before. Usually it's been overwide & overlong. Thought that was it was supposed to be. I mostly make crib, twin & full sized quilts & haven't thought about buying "off the bolt". And you're right bout the thin spots..Don't like them either.

Thanks
Gina
