Isn't the recipe to get the nasties out of an old rescued quilt:
equal parts Dreft, 20 Mule Team Borax (or Borateem) and Clorox 2? At the craft show this weekend, I rescued a churn dash, feed sacks on the back. It smells like the back of the garage, looks like someone spilled no telling what and cherry kool-aid on it. I've got my Grandma's spot remover for the pink stuff. Just want to make sure what to fill the bathtub with before I put the quilt in for a nice long soak. Cold Water? Warm? Sassy NeedlePusher |

On suggestion...instead of soaking in the bath tub, soak in the washer. Then, when the soak is done you can spin it to get the excess water out. As long as you put it on delicate, it shouldn't hurt it. Just don't put it through with the aggitator on.

I have a lot of success with OxyClean. Living in a condo, I give the offender an all day soak in a pail with cool water. Then pour it out in the shower stall and gently rinse. If it still is stained, I do it again. It has removed brown stains and smells, but pink KoolAid sounds like a case for your Grandma's stain remover.

Thanks, ladies. That's a couple more things to add to the shopping list. Haven't had Dreft in my house in 20+ years! OxyClean...don't know that I've seen that in my store since when it first came out...maybe I just need to look closer. With the loost weave on this feedsacks on this quilt, I don't think I could dig it out of my washer without tearing it, so, will do the tub thing, and pretend I'm Lucy stomping grapes to get the water out. Guess I better wait til a day it's sunny outside to lay it out to dry...the rain has been coming down since 6 a.m. and the sky is gray, so, don't think it's gonna get sunny enough to dry this quilt for a while.
Sure hope it comes out nice...this is the quilt that will be folded and stored under the coffee table til time to pull it out for TV watching! Sassy NeedlePusher |
