Ok, now another question about the binding. After it is sewn on and turned to back side, do you pin it down all the way around; pin as you go; or not pin at all? How do you do it. I'm thinking to pin, but I didn't want to do it all the way around; afraid I will loose some pins in my carpet. How do you do it?

I don't pin. .I just fold it over and stitch as I go.

I don't use pins anymore, but when I did, I would pin about 1-2 feet at a time & repin when I had to add more thread.

I now use binding clips. They are those flexible, snappy hair barrettes. You can find them in the quilting aisle or the hair dept. Smile I like them SO much better than pins. If you have enough, you can secure the whole binding at once & not worry about poking yourself or losing pins in the carpet as you worked.

Thank you for your responses. I have some of those clips. I had forgotten about them. Will go right now and get them. Thank you. I wasn't really wanting to pin.

Another option if you are hand stitching away from home: I used to use the washaway vanishing thread to sew the flipped side of the binding in place with the sewing machine. It looked finished but the thread will disappear in the first wash (or rain!). I would then hand stitch it down before washing. That works great when we drove to CA from MN and the quilt was a Christmas gift.

Now I sew binding on the backside, flip it to the front and machine sew it down. Works so nice for me and the bindings are much more even sized on both sides.

I just stitch as I go also. The pins are a nuisance. A friend tells me she uses fusible thread in the bobbin. Then she turns and presses the binding in place before she stitches it down. Sounds like an extra step to me. Sewing on binding is good seat work while watching TV.

I use the binding clips on fabric that doesn't play nicely if I stitch as I go, but lately I use them less and less.

I like using the binding clips. I think it's a lot faster (and less painful) than pinning.

Well, here is the finished product. Looks a little wavy to me, but did my best. The quilting turned out really pretty. Just hope they like it. I am certainly glad I finished it in time. Wedding is next week. Of course I didn't have it for the shower. Will try to post.
