My daughter is looking to transfer a line drawing onto cloth (pink canvas bag she bought at Michael's). Unfortunately, none of the stores in our area have those pencils that she could trace her drawing and then iron it onto the bag. She doesn't want to use dressmakers tracing paper. She thought she could print the image on her laserjet printer and then iron it onto the canvas because the laserjet printer uses toner. does anyone know if this would work, or does anyone have other suggestions.

TIA

do NOT use the laserjet. When I have made transfers for embroidery from computer printed designs, I need to make a copy on the inkjet and then trace that one and use to iron it on.

When I make a mistake and use the laser copy, the iron melts the toner on my iron. So then I have pressed it with a cloth over the toner to get the transfer pencil from the back onto my planned cloth.

She may be able to get the toner to transfer to the canvas, but I don't know that it will ever be a safe, long lasting transfer. Any pressing could melt it again, and maybe in the dryer it will give problems also and transfer onto other items in the dryer. I would be careful to try it on some junk stuff if she still wants that method.

Walmart, Joanns and Hanc*cks should have the red transfer pencils. Nancy's Notions sells a transfer pen by Sulky that is black and does a good job.

thanks for the reply. we called our local walmart and they no longer carry the pencil you are referring to. hancock fabrics in our area went out of business 2 years ago, and the closet joann's is over an hour away.

Her intention is to iron the design onto the canvas or onto fabric and then to use Aunt Annie's ball point "embroidery" paint to go over the design.

You might have to order the pen/pencil on line. Or would crayons work? Anyone?

I don't think that crayons would take the paint because it's wax. But it is a good thought.

My mother heavily traces the design with a black lead pencil and then she irons it onto her project. She has been doing this for years.
Good luck

I wouldn't use the laser jet to do this. I know the toner smears badly. If you can't get it printed on an inkjet printer, you'd be better off using a transfer pen.

I just happened to see a video Joyce Drexler of the Sulky Company put on regarding Sulky's transfer pens. You can see it on QNN's e-mail newsletter as a freebie. She demos their line of transfer pens and it sounds as if this might work for you. JoAnn's carries them, but I think I have seen them only in black there although they have several colors. Good luck.

well, yesterday i had to do some traveling and found a joann's fabric store. they had a dritz iron-on transfer pencil. so i picked up. we haven't used it yet.

but thanks for this extra info. i sure would like to know where all the fabric went... i can't even find a quilt shop listed in my area! this is really getting depressing... everything seems to be available on-line, but when you want it NOW <lol> you can't find it...
