I don't know why I look at these threads when they talk about organization of sewing rooms. It makes me a little depressed as I always seem to be in a state of disawray. Oh well...someday...

My thinking is that you do one of two things, either sew/craft/create in a room OR clean, organize and keep your room neat. I choose the former.

well, fishingwidow, I am with you on this.... but, saying that, I want to have a very organized, comfortable, calming place to go to - and living in a disaster area, trying to stay productive instead of stressed, makes me keep trying to get to the "I know where everything is and I put it back when I am finished with it" stage!

I want a place to escape to - not from!!!! So, I will read anything on how people have gotten their spaces to that state I dream of, to see if I can pick up any hints or ideas that I can use. And, sometimes things just go together (and like right now, they fall apart!! BUT! I know I can create my dream space, I just need to keep working at it everyday, and one day I will have my oasis in the praries!! Wink

I will go and check out those sites now..... I have my tea ready (still hot even!!) and I will dream........

thanks for showing us these nancy20!!! Have a great Sunday...... This is the perfect way to spend it - getting ideas for the coming week and just dreaming. Thanks!! Big Grin

I finish everything I start!! (okay, I am trying to make this a reality!!) And I start many things!!! (this is very true!!!)

I like looking at the rooms in the hope that I can do an idea here or there on the CHEAP...I can't afford nice bureaus, shelves, sewing tables, etc. I use garage sale finds & budget wire shelving. I am most fortunate to have a small BR to myself, except for the ironing board in there which is community property. When sewing became dominate over crafting I took my meager stash out of the closet shelves & put all crafting items in there. Now the fabric is on a mishmash of various bookcase type shelves around the room. There is little room to walk in the room, but while working, I throw all discards, snippets of thread & such on the floor where it stays for a day - or - two weeks. When a project is complete, I put everything away & vacuum-ready to proceed with the next project. Those "sell my house" programs would not be happy with this room!!

I agree with Clarosie,

When I see those rooms they all look like they are for show more than working. Their workspaces always seem to be pretty small and the supplies look like they are there for decoration instead of use.

Have you noticed that the sewing machine is usually sitting on a desk with all kinds of things around and behind it? Where will you fit the stacks of cut fabric pieces or the rest of the full quilt as you sew on the latest rows or borders, let alone a binding?

they have to be done by a designer that only looks at crafting/sewing but doesn't really do it.

Did you see the chrome dining table on concrete blocks? Neat idea but I don't have the room for it. I'm looking around my room now. Um...it doesn't look anything like the photos in the links provided. ;0)

I like the comment about the sewing room being a place to run TO not FROM. But my small bedroom shares space with clothing storage & seasonal storage.
My big question today is what are the essential tools you always have "beside" your sewing machine - and how do you organize them? And what does everyone do about thread and bobbins? I think changing bobbins/thread is a nightmare. Would love to hear what all of you do.

Uhmmmm, I use grey thread - and that's it.... so thread a bobbins aren't a problem simply because I don't have many.... but - saying that, I just took a few classes on threads and that is making me realize, my thread collecion is going to be changing here soon.... the seconed web site posted above, she has ideas on what to do with threads/bobbins and so I would go check that out and see what you see there that you can use.

But yeah, it's the accessories that really make the clutter and the mess...... what to do with them so you can find them again????! Big Grin

The have tos while sewing are the reason that I really like my sewing cabinet with drawers right beside me. My most used thread are in the skinny top one, and the toolbox from the active machine (dropped in) is in the second one with the cover open. There I have the extra feet, etc. and the bobbins. I also have the donut rings to hold additional bobbins. On the right I keep the scissors/nippers and a small 9 drawer parts box/cabinet with seam rippers, marking pencils and chalk, glue stick and other "catch-all" stuff.

I sew on a desk and I have to rearrange it with extra boards when a quilt gets too large. Which I guess is an incentive to quilt QUICKLY! For piecing I keep my stacks under the plexiglass surround for my machine.

My room is only clean if I'm not working on anything (which unfortunately has been the case for months now). Once I start a project it's disaster mode until the next big cleanup.

I love my Bernina's accessory case. It sits on the windowsill behind the machine and holds bobbins and presser feet, plus needles and other accessories in the drawers. I have MANY extra bobbin holders and feet holders than what they show, in fact I have a whole extra case since I "outgrew" the first one! My scissors and seam ripper and stiletto are on the side, and threads are mostly on racks on the wall. (I do keep them covered when I'm not sewing). The embroidery threads are in boxes on shelves under the machine, and whatever doesn't fit there is in the desk drawers. Organised I am not!!

I love looking at these sites, but I have no real money to buy the stuff shown. I am going to be using what I have, or what I can create or find at next year's garage sales (won't be many in Nebraska now, too cold). The former owner's of my house left behind a shelving unit that if I can get it down from the dormer, and cleaned, it will hold a fair amount of my fabrics.

I really like that accessory case - too bad there isn't a generic one sold. I'd buy it - I use a craft box with the name of the foot written obove each space. One for each machine. It works well for me and it keeps things from getting lost in a drawer, etc. I even put things back - most of the time Smile
