I don't use pins anymore, but when I did, I would pin about 1-2 feet at a time & repin when I had to add more thread. I now use binding clips. They are those flexible, snappy hair barrettes. You can find them in the quilting aisle or the hair dept. I like them SO much better than pins. If you have enough, you can secure the whole binding at once & not worry about poking yourself or losing pins in the carpet as you worked.

Another option if you are hand stitching away from home: I used to use the washaway vanishing thread to sew the flipped side of the binding in place with the sewing machine. It looked finished but the thread will disappear in the first wash (or rain!). I would then hand stitch it down before washing. That works great when we drove to CA from MN and the quilt was a Christmas gift.
Now I sew binding on the backside, flip it to the front and machine sew it down. Works so nice for me and the bindings are much more even sized on both sides.

I use the binding clips on fabric that doesn't play nicely if I stitch as I go, but lately I use them less and less. Lisa

I like using the binding clips. I think it's a lot faster (and less painful) than pinning.
