WELCOME TO THE 2012 HGTV FORUM BLOCK OF THE MONTH! Wave

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

The theme this year is MAKE IT YOUR OWN!!!

ivy_cottage (Camilla) and I (CBQ, Little Red Hen) are 'egg'-cited and thrilled to be working with you on the BOM this year! Smile

You are not swapping, exchanging or anything else, just make the blocks we suggest every month, show us a photo of your work, and be entered into a drawing for a wonderful prize. Smile ALL board members are welcome to join us!

SEW ... each month, we will be doing a block from Quilter's Cache. We will also reveal some smaller blocks that you can make and join to your 12 inch block.

Star Star Star Star Star Star Star Star

Credit: Marcia Hohn has graciously said we can use blocks from The Quilter's Cache again this year. Please read her Terms and Conditions at: http://www.quilterscache.com/. And follow the below guideline. "Should photographs of items made from Original designs be posted on your group website, they should also be clearly marked with the name of the pattern As I have it named, and that it is from The Quilter's Cache/Marcia Hohn." (Since you'll post your pictures in this thread, you will be covered by that statement.)

Star Star Star Star Star Star Star Star

The smaller blocks are totally optional~ you can make what we suggest, make something else, or not make any at all! Make it your own!

Star Star Star Star Star Star Star Star

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

This year we will challenge you to stretch your skills, ideas and creativity, while sewing and even trying new block patterns as well as methods. We are here to help! Use this thread to post your questions, problems anything related to the BOM~ and we will try to answer them for you. Smile

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

One other important note~ we are NOT presenting you the blocks in any order. January's block will not go in the upper left hand corner of your quilt! Smile Just to mix things up we are presenting them in no particular order, but if you join us for the year, in December we will reveal the layout we have chosen. Smile

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
Step One~

Now ... without further clucking ... HERE'S the JUNE BLOCK ~~

Memory

Step 2~ the mini blocks will be posted below this post~~

SO Y'ALL COME ON AND HAVE SOME FUN!!!
AND DON'T FORGET TO POST THOSE PICS Cool WE LOVE PICS! Cool

NOTE: If you have trouble posting pictures, or have a challenge with resizing them to post, you can SEND THEM TO ONE OF US VIA EMAIL, and we will BE HAPPY Big Grin to resize them and post for you !!!

Step 2~ the surrounding blocks~

Sashing~ Cut 2.5 inch strips. Two are cut at 12.5 inches, and two are cut at 16.5 inches. Sew to block.

Large Flying Geese

Make them the same way you made the small flying geese in the block, but use~

6.5 inch rectangles
and two 3.5 inch squares for each 'goose'

Make 7.

Cut 1.5 inch squares for the little strip~ 3 dark and 3 light.

***Sew together and save the cut off HST's~ you will be that much farther ahead next month Wink ****

Small 4 patch blocks

I cut a 1.5 by 3.25 inch strip of a dark and and light sewed them together, pressed to the dark. Cut off two 1.5 inch segments (you will have just a scant bit of waste for accuracy) and pieced individual 4 patch blocks. You need 12 blocks. They should measure 2.5 inches.

Alternate the 4 patch blocks with 12~ 2.5 inch squares. This section will measure 6.5 x 16.5 inches. Add it to your block first, then add the flying geese row.

And that's it! Pretty easy month, wouldn't you agree? Smile
Here's Camilla's...

Arghhh!! What happened to the printer friendly version...I can barely see the tiny print Smile Looks like I'd better get out my magnifying glass.

I realized recently that I made the wrong Jacob's Ladder blocks for the small blocks for one of the months....the one I did was more complicated than the one shown. Boy did I feel dumb Smile I went on "memory" and obviously that was off. So now I try to print off the instructions with the picture and bring it downstairs to refer to.

I made my block different on purpose. I saw some of the blocks that Marcia had for examples and really liked how the star showed up with the dark in the middle, so that's what I decided to do.

I was thinking about making a big quilt with the blocks with the dark in the middle. It looked so neat, but with all those little pieces and all those seams, I thought it might be hard to quilt.

I tried to copy and paste what it looks like with a set of 6 blocks together with the dark in the middle, but I can't move it over here. Maybe DH will have time to help me, It is really neat looking.
ETA: this is from Marcia Hohns site where they show examples of other blocks they made.

I have all the inner pieces for the main block ready to sew into rows...whew! I wish I would have picked a darker fabric to go with the background - I haven't gotten my sewing table retrofitted to the Janome yet so I'm using the acrylic table that came with it. Thee is a gap betwen the acrylic and the machine bed....sewing multiple flying geese leaving the main part behind. You'd think I'd learn after the first one Smile I have got to find someone to fix my table very soon, I don't like sewing on it this way.

Everyone's blocks are looking great and hope to see more as the days go by. I did a second block, but reversed the light and dark. Like Patty j posted with the brown and white. I am thinking of making a quilt with the Green Asian fabric to see how that would look. Will post my block after I get a few more done to see if I really like it. Sue
