Hi,
I'm finishing up a wall hanging for my in-laws, and would like some advice about hanging it. The quilt is about 2 feet on each side. I was going to make a sleeve that was about 2 inches deep on one side and 2 1/2 inches deep on the other, so that there is some slack for the rod. When you give a wall hanging for a gift, how much of the hardware do you include? If so, do you give the rod and the hooks that hold it to the wall, or just the rod? If I include just the rod, how far out should it extend from the quilt? I wouldn't mind making the rod but I don't really feel like hunting down the hardware to hang the quilt on the wall. Thanks for your help! "Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe." |

Thanks Genie!
How do you keep your quilts from sliding off the rod? After I read your post I talked to dh, who said not only do we need to provide all the hardware but we will have to hang it too, otherwise it will get lost in my in-laws house. I described your post and he said we should use a slat. He'll drill holes in a part of the slat that will be outside the sleeve. Then we'll hang the slat directly onto picture hangers. I'm going to leave the drilling and hanging to him. (It's not that I can't do it....I just don't like to.) "Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe." |

Amy, there are several ways to hang a wall hanging - with or without a sleeve.
Since your wall hanging is small - you could also - just put a little sleeve in the very middle (or skip that) and put a triangle piece into the corners of the top (fold a square piece of material into a triangle and sew into the binding on the corners). Then your slat will fit right in and hold the top tight. I have also used decorative curtain hanger rings and clipped to the top - using a decorative cafe curtain rod to hang it. And in order to avoid putting holes in the wall - I have used (for something this small) those plastic self stick -easy removal hooks to hold the rod. There are also these really neat (can be decorative) hangers usually used for larger quilts that are found in the LQS. They hold the quilt by pinching the top border between two blocks of wood. To answer you specific question - on some wall hangings I have provided the rings, rod and sticky hooks. On others I haven't. It depends on the situation. Are we going to get to see your wall hanging? |

geniebird, I have a question too? When you say you make a sleeve and slip the curtain rod through, when you hand it on the nails, you must mean that the fabric sleeve is also sitting on the nail, right? I am trying to imagine this in my head. I use cafe decorative rods but am thinking I may go the route of the clear almost flat rods that you use for sheer panels. I have some of this type on my french doors and they lay flat and I was thinking I might try and use that type for hanging. Can you explain a bit further on what you do? thanks.

Genie,
That is what I was wondering -- if there is no knob on the end of the rod, what would keep the quilt from sliding off, either while hanging or once it is up on the wall. (Of course if no one messes with it, it shouldn't fall off...) I think we've figured out what to do. We went to Home Depot on Saturday and found a metal deck strap -- it's just thin, strong, just the right length, and has two holes near the ends for the picture hooks. I've made a sleeve and will attach it to the quilt this week. I also need to make the label for the quilt. When it's all finished I'll post some photos. Thanks for your help, Amy "Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe." |
