Gosh, I wonder if that trick would have worked on some flannel I bought to make a toddler's quilt. The stuff smelled absolutely terrible. I tried all kinds of things and it still smelled. I wouldn't use it for the DGGS, had no idea what the smell was. So out it went.

I read that blog article, thank you. I can't believe she ordered fabric and it reeked of smoke. I would have demanded a refund. How thoughtless. I was at one of the big quilt shows and one of the vendor booths had awesome fabric but it all smelled like cigarette smoke. I didn't buy anything there.

One of the absolute BEST things that I have found to remove those nasty smells from fabric (or clothes etc.) is Odoban it is available at Home Depot and other places (Sam's, Costco, Walmart...) in a gallon jug or the spray bottle sometimes you can get both together for about $9.00. Just add to your wash and or rinse cycle.

I once bought a bolt of red flannel at an estate sale for $3 and when I got it home, I realized that it reeked of "something". The sale had been at an old farmhouse lived in for decades by an old couple and at least one of them smoked. There was no telling how old the material was or what it had been exposed to but I thought it was worth a try to neutralize the odors. I cut it up in 2 yd lengths, washed it i hot water first to get rid of any cooking smells, then I rewashed it using vinegar and detergent and that seemed to do the trick.

I once received something from a member of this Board in a swap and when I opened the ziploc bag it smelled as if she had blown in a mouthful of cigarette smoke before she zipped it up. First thing I HAD to do was wash it and soak it in vinegar water. Thankfully it was washable and survived.
