Are our seams suppose to nest into each other? Mine are all going in the same direction.

One more dumb question. Should we be matching up the seams?? So that the 5 inch strip matches the other 5 inch strips?? I'll show picture.
Or are they supposed to not match and be more random???

Thanks Mary, I'll finish sewing the other placemats. But I'm going to re-iron the seams so they nest better, good idea who ever suggested that. Pat

Patty,

When you say they are not lining up, is it possible you got the strips upside down?

Patty I like your fabrics. It looks like your far right & far left stips might be upside down.

Patty,

The third and fourth strip if you rotate them are exactly the same. I think you need to rotate them and the third strip should then be the first strip. See how that looks.

Didn't get to play last night but checked things out later and, of course, I have a question. I don't have many FQs so I'll probably have to trim some from yardage.

To what size are you trimming the FQs? A FQ is 18" x 1/2 WOF, or 18" x 20 (21)", right? That leaves 7" for that bottom piece but according to the directions it should be somewhere around 5". Do I trim it to 5"? W/o trimming it, my piece measures 16" long when sewn.

When I make the vertical cuts and sew everything together, my piece winds up being 19 3/4" wide.

That's a heck of a big placemat, 16" x 19 3/4".

I am obviously doing something wrong.

Debbie - your picture with your kitty took me by surprise. Your kitty could be a twin of a younger version of the cat we had for 18 years! She passed a few years ago.

After all seams are sewn together and mats are pressed you can square them up any size you desire. I think I'll square-up mine to 13" by 18" and that way, allowing for turning, they'll be just a little smaller than that. I have commercially-made mats that size.
You can cut them to any size. I think it depends on how large or small you want them. Here are mine before squaring-up....

Hi all,

Glad you enjoyed the class. I love all the different looks. I made a set of Christmas ones for myself.

Paus4quilts, you are right that a FQ is about 18 x 21ish. But I would NOT cut anything off that bottom piece until you are finished with your sewing them all together. Then you can take a look at them and decide what finished size you want them to be. Quiltbea said after she was done sewing and pressing that she wanted to square hers up to 13 x 18. But I would not cut till finished putting them together so you can decide how big/small you want them to be.

Yes, I will get instructions to JRD to post. I will clean them up to be clearer and add some photos.

Anael, sorry you were a day late but we look forward to seeing your finished placemats.

First I will post a picture of the finished ones I used as the class sample last nite.

Mary

These are so pretty! I didn't participate in the class but am thinking of making a few adjustments in the size to end up with mug rugs. I teach a ladies Sunday school class and want to make mug rugs with a mug for each member for Christmas gifts. Also I'm wondering if it could be done with only two fabrics and one less cut. I'll let you know if my idea works.
