I came to this board looking for answers by going to the Simply Quilts TV show site. I was working on a T shirt quilt and my thread kept breaking. Who knew that 6 years later I would be able to harrass Nicki cause she wont post!!!!!!!!

What about you guys? What brought you here?

Simply Quilts led me here too! I've learned a lot more here than I did watching Simply Quilts.
I still miss the show, it used to come on at 5:30 Am. That and a cup of coffee got me going in the morning, now many years later, I don't get up til 6 or 7.

It was 2002, I had started a new job and didn't keep me busy, so I surfed the "interwebs". I also watched Simply Quilts, would record it at 5:30 am; (I'm in WA too Joyce). Soon joined swaps and such. I have many treasured friendships. I am on facebook more than here, but still do the scraps-to-treasure challenge. Have done several of Thearica's challenges.
This is a great question and discussion starter.

l got my first computer right after our cable company started airing HGTV. On HGTV they mentioned the message boards (something l don't think they ever do now?) Back then all Crafts were on one board. That was before you had to register. Been here ever since. First with all crafts then this board with crocheting and stayed even after crocheting was moved. Sewn most of my life then inspired to start quilting by my Grandma Bessie who quilted all her life.

l would be unstopable IF l could get started!!!

And I'm still just beginning.

I had seen this board thanks to HGTV and Simply Quilts, too. But it wasn't until I needed a pattern for a unicorn for a quilt I was planning to make that I joined the board.
Since then I've learned so much, made so many good friends... and still have not made the unicorn quilt. Maybe someday......

I stumbled in here looking to find the name of some quilt blocks I inherited, and hopefully be inspired so I wouldn't be so homesick for the states after I had been in Australia for over a year, got an answer and have since made friends whom I love dearly and have been inspired and learned so much...Quilters are the BEST!

When working full time in CA, I would watch Simply Quilts... just cause I liked it and thought one day I might retire. When we moved here in 2005, I knew no one and had no neighbors... while trying to figure out what the heck I was gonna do with my time, I thought of Simply Quilts so checked out the website. One trail led to another, and here I am ... and I too was a lurker before joining, cause I couldn't understand a THING y'all were saying Smile Especially the DH, DS, HST ... Wave

After retiring needed something to occupy myself during the colder month when I become a 'hermit'. So won a class to learn to quilt at the LQS, got the bug and started looking for more info. Like most of you, because of HGTV and Simply Quilts - found my way here.

Have learned so much and enjoy the banter between those that have met.

In 2001 I opened a spam email that was titled "Message In A Bottle".... It was one of those emails that you click on a bottle and a scroll pops out with a message in it... (yes I was a new pc user and didn't know not to open spam) hehe

BUT.....

The scroll asked " I am a quilter, are you?"

So I thought what the heck and I answered it and said something like, "Yes, I am.. I am from Alabama, where are you from"

They answered back and we struck up an email penpal friendship...

Fast forward 2 years later and I move to North Carolina.... Me and this friend are still emailing back and forth...

I find that I get lonely here in NC because I know noone so my email friend tells me about an awesome quilting forum known as the HGTV Quilting and Needlework Forum...So I come check it out!

I joined on October 21, 2003 and hosted my very first round robin that November!!! 24217 posts, and I am still going strong! ha!

All this thanks to our very own TerryOH!!

YEP... TerryOH was the owner of that piece of spam email that just happened to drop off in my inbox! And I am so glad that I opened it!

She and her family came to NC for vacation a couple of years ago and we finally got to meet face to face!! Smile

I was watching Simply Quilts when Alex interviewed the designer of the "Strolling the Block" quilt. (It is a calendar quilt with a different house each month.) I was making the quilt from the HGTV web site when I saw a message board related to the BOM quilt. I lurked for a little while and then took the plunge and joined and here I/we are today chatting, posting and meeting each other next summer in Harrisburg. Great Experience and a great group.

I originally joined the decorating board because of Room by Room. Had been quilting for some time, but didn't know about Simply Quilts because it was on when I worked. When a quilt I made for my mom got legs and walked away from her hospital room one day, I set about duplicating it (it was a block of the month from Joann's). Got the blocks to replace it from eBay, but needed additional fabric for sashings and borders and found Joann's didn't have it anymore. So saw that HGTV had a quilting board and came here looking for help. Several ladies sent me pieces of that fabric from their stash without wanting anything in return. I've stayed ever since and consider you my "on line" quilt guild and cherished friends!

I had learned a few things about quilting from magazines. When I finally got cable, I started watching Simply Quilts, and heard that they had a website. I looked it up and saw a few things - like the Stroll around the Block patterns - but didn't find the message board at first. Then on the last day of the Memorial Day weekend, I found the message board. I had to go to work the next day, and I was worried that I'd never find my way back here again - I was really totally new to computers.

I had heard scare stories about the internet, so I thought I would just read along - didn't know the word "lurking" then - and not Sign In. Well, first, I really wanted to see the pictures. Then, after 2 weeks, CBQ started a CW Fat Quarter swap that was calling my name.

I took a leap of faith and signed up. CBQ took a leap of faith and let a newbie into her swap. I've been here ever since.

Oh, by the way, what they say about the dangers of the internet is all true. This board has inspired me to buy a new sewing machine, loads more fabric that I ever imagined owning (my stash used to consist of one grocery bag), and almost every quilting gadget ever invented. Big Grin

I got here via Simply Quilts too. I was such a new computer user (despite the fact that DH works with/programs computers) and quilter I didn't even know enough to ask a proper question. But everyone on here seemed so nice and I wanted see what all the oohhing and ahhhing was all about, so I signed up using my MIL's nickname for me. I haven't regretted anything I've done or tried with this board. I'm so grateful for all of your help. Thanks Pat

Enjoy my time here but it takes away from sewing time, cooking, AND cleaning house. Since my daughters are grown and living somewhere else I get my sewing and quilting fix here.
And I am glad I steered Quiltaholic here.

I used to be able to listen to HGTV while getting ready for work.(Now the channel starts too late.) I checked out the boards when it was mentioned and started looking for knitting, redwork, and general crafting. I was here several years before registration and enjoyed the evening live chats when they were happening.

I really don't remember what prompted me to look. I do know that I was a member for a long time before I actually started posting. I was so intimidated, if you can believe that. My day just is not complete without several visits here to see what's going on. Even though I grew up in a household where Mama quilted and I could sew, I had never done any quilting until about 10 years ago when a local guild was forming. Now, I can't imagine being without it.

I was searching for something quilt related on ask.com, my search led me here. I lurked for a while, then got involved in swaps and secret sister exchange. I had a period of inactivity mostly because I had computer issues and it wasn't easy to log in. Even during that time I found a way to at least check in periodically. This board has always feld like home, a place you can always return to and be welcomed with open arms. I have yet to phisically meet anyone, but I'm looking forward to an Oregon get together and then my first COF retreat.

I was on another general craft site but the majority of the other posters on that site were much younger than I was. When one of the posters found some 45 records at a garage sale and posted a picture asking what they were I knew it was time for me to go find a group closer to my own age! LOL I searched the internet, found this group and have been here ever since.

Looks like many of us started out with Simply Quilts. I hadn't been quilting very long at that point and was caretaker to DMIL-Alz and this was a great connection to share knowledge. The COF is a great gathering and I have had some wonderful times with many here and look forward to many more.

I found it because I used to come to hgtv for info when I watched Alex Anderson, then found the quilting forum. I was a lurker for awhile but signed up so I could see the photos. Then I broke an ankle and couldn't do very much and it was winter and I was stuck in the house and the forum became my second home. I guess this place became the rainbow for me during a stormy time.

I learned a lot here, found many friends, attended the COF's and our friendships have been a blessing!!

So wishing everyone a very safe end of the year and a very blessed and healthy, happy new year.

I too watched SQ.

What drove me here was a question about an antique block I inherited. I wanted to know the name and to replicate it to make a quilt using the old and new blocks. I remember LadyTX was the one who found the name and pattern for me. She sent it to me from her EQ not sure of the number then. The rest is history I have joined swaps, hosted swaps and met many friends from around the world.

Now I am in the process of taking all those swaps and making the quilts with them. I have 2 done and many WIP's, but better to be a WIP than still sitting in the closet waiting to get started, I have a bunch of those too! Big Grin

I became a fan of the Simply Quilts show around a year before it ended... I didn't know it was on!

The 5:30am show was perfect, I could enjoy it before going to work. When we finally got a computer for the family, I went on to the website and found all the lovely episode links. I saw the "Chat With Alex" button and found this forum.

We finally got internet in our area of the dingles. so I was just messing around seeing what was there. I also was more directly sent here from checking out HGTV quilts shown on Simply Quilts. My local library ladies had fun seeing me come in before to get directions for the quilts after I had seen them on the show. That's what can happen when you no longer need to leave the home to go to another job! (I had started to work at home with our business, but it left a lot of learn the internet time!)

When we moved to Florida in June of '99, I had cable for the first time and could get HGTV when it was good-Quilting, sewing, craft, gardening shows. Didn't know how good we had it!

Lurked, because I wasn't doing any actual quilting (just stashing everything quilt related) so didn't sign on, as I thought I didn't have the expertise to post anything. Think it was when you had to join to see the pictures, that I signed on and have enjoyed every minute since... Chris

Boy , Kids,

Always saying their Mother made me do it. But Angelinamor is right, I wanted to go to the first COF and thought it might be a wild crazy bunch and thought there was safety in numbers - haha. L

But it turned out great! That is what ususally happens when you listen to your Mom - smiley face. (don't know why I can get the emotioncons to work).
