Thank you to all who responded to my thread about future swaps for 2009. One the swaps will be using our oriental fabrics in Chinese lantern blocks... I'm just not sure which block. So I thought a little poll would be fun... no stress, no worries, nothing is written in stone and you are not making a committment yet. Smile

Lets look at the photo from left to right. The first one on the left being block 'A', 'B' is in the middle and 'C' on the right.

Block A~ is 12 inches finished. It is regualr piecing. We would use our oriental fabrics for the main part, the color wheel to decide the stripes Wink and black Kona cotton for the top/bottom, with W-o-W for the background.

Block B~ is from Marcia Hohn's QuiltersCache website and is paper-pieced. It measures 7 x 12 finished. I suppose it could be re-drafted to avoid paper-piecing, but it is really easy to paper-piece. My biggest problem was getting the pattern to print out the correct size. We would use black Kona cotton for the background.

Block C~ is also regular pieced. I like the black Kona background, but it could be cream also~ Again, I think we will use the color wheel in determining the top/bottom colors. Smile

Thank you for all your patience as I get this swap worked out. Smile

Oh~ I am looking at an early to mid-March due date. I can't make it any later because of family plans... Wink

Question:
Which one would you most be interested in swapping? If you have 2 favorites, please leave a comment for me. Smile

Choices:
Block A
Block B
Block C
Block C with cream background

Big Grin I think I like "B" because of the beautiful Oriental fabric you used, to be honest. It's my 1st choice! Big Grin

Smile "A" would be my 2nd favorite. (I like the light background, myself.)

Of course, this by no means obligates me to the swap, right? Wink LOL

I vote for B too! I like it best b/c it's not a literal lantern and I think it showcases the fabric the best.

And I love the orientals on the black - STUNNING!!

CBQ, is block A available on the web? If so, can you tell me the site address? Thanks!

Ohhh, looks like B is in the lead! Big Grin Wink Eek

And just FYI, all the blocks are made with FQ's I found at the LQS in the 'oriental' section... there are a lot of oriental fabrics out there! Smile

I prefer block "A" simply because so many of the Oriental fabrics are really large prints. And this block allows you to use a nice (almost) 12" piece of the fabric. I think block "B" cuts the fabric up too much.
I also like the black at the top and bottom of the lantern in block "A".

When in doubt, do the friendliest thing.

I dunno ???? They are all pretty. They would all look nice together. I say the black background though--just cuz I like it. I also think they would all be cute with the kimono block too. I know--busy busy- but would be pretty arranged just right.

The kimono could be in the center. here is a link to what the block looks like- don't know a free site with a pattern though sorry.

Just an idea I had. "kikos kimono"

one block would be okay to swap too. I may join it. Block C would be my favorite with the black background of course. as usual it seems I am the odd gal out. I guess I just have the different taste heheheheh

It will mess up the poll if I try to change anything above, so if you had a choice of the above 'B' or the larger one in this photo, which would you choose? Wink

Hi! I like block "A" above.

bluesnail -- I agree with you about the Orientals having large prints and this block ("A") allows the fabric to be showcased.

CBQ -- What size does the new block "B" on the right finish? Is it square?

TIA Smile

Hi C'BQ.

I made a test block of "B" printed directly from Quilter's Cache, only I extended the black fabric past the pattern edge. When I completed the block I cut it to the 7.5" unfinished width, and the length came out to 11.75" unfinished (top to bottom). Cut this way, there would not be any chance of cutting off points (middle 2 pieces) when putting the blocks together.

It's a simple enough modification without having to try to enlarge or physically change the on-line pattern. Trouble is, the length is a bit odd (finishes at 11.25").

Then again, if we ALL make the block exactly from the website pattern they should all fit together. We'd just have to do a bit of figuring for our borders and/or sashings, etc.

I like the black extended so the oriental fabrics kind of float. Big Grin Yes, I like the "thinner" one better than the chunky one Smile
