*y'all have been such good sports all year~ I thought you deserved this month's block a little early Wink ~enjoy!!

WELCOME TO THE 2012 HGTV FORUM BLOCK OF THE MONTH! Wave

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

The theme this year is MAKE IT YOUR OWN!!!

ivy_cottage (Camilla) and I (CBQ, Little Red Hen) are 'egg'-cited and thrilled to be working with you on the BOM this year! Smile

You are not swapping, exchanging or anything else, just make the blocks we suggest every month, show us a photo of your work, and be entered into a drawing for a wonderful prize. Smile ALL board members are welcome to join us!

SEW ... each month, we will be doing a block from Quilter's Cache. We will also reveal some smaller blocks that you can make and join to your 12 inch block.

Star Star Star Star Star Star Star Star

Credit: Marcia Hohn has graciously said we can use blocks from The Quilter's Cache again this year. Please read her Terms and Conditions at: http://www.quilterscache.com/. And follow the below guideline. "Should photographs of items made from Original designs be posted on your group website, they should also be clearly marked with the name of the pattern As I have it named, and that it is from The Quilter's Cache/Marcia Hohn." (Since you'll post your pictures in this thread, you will be covered by that statement.)

Star Star Star Star Star Star Star Star

The smaller blocks are totally optional~ you can make what we suggest, make something else, or not make any at all! Make it your own!

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

This year we will challenge you to stretch your skills, ideas and creativity, while sewing and even trying new block patterns as well as methods. We are here to help! Use this thread to post your questions, problems anything related to the BOM~ and we will try to answer them for you. Smile

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

One other important note~ we are NOT presenting you the blocks in any order. January's block will not go in the upper left hand corner of your quilt! Smile Just to mix things up we are presenting them in no particular order, but if you join us for the year, in December we will reveal the layout we have chosen. Smile

Step 2~ the surrounding blocks~

Sashing~ Cut 2.5 inch strips. Two are cut at 12.5 inches, and two are cut at 16.5 inches. Sew to block.

The Churn Dash blocks
Make 5 blocks

Make 4 HST's for each block your favorite way. I cut 2 7/8th's squares, drew the line and sewed on either side. Square them up to 2.5 inches

Make 4 striped segments~
cut a 1.5 by 10.5 strip of your light and your dark for each block. Sew them together, cut into 2.5 inch segments; they should measure 2.5 inches square if your quarter inch seam is correct. Wink

Cut one center for each block~ 2.5 inches.

Assemble as you would a 9-patch block except DO NOT sew the top row to one of the blocks. ~If you do, you will have to un-sew to assemble the large block. Wink See my photo above.

Each block should measure 6.5 inches

*note how I made some with the main color as the Churn Dash and some the background makes the Churn Dash? If you always press to the dark, they go together really nicely when sewing everything together. Smile

The Broken Dishes blocks

Remember last month I had you save the cut off HST's from the large flying geese? Select 8 of them and square them up to 2.5 inches. Sew together to make the two Broken Dishes blocks~~ easy right? Smile

the 'connector' blocks

I cut 1.5 inch strips and squares and made the checkerboards and 4 patch. You can do that; or add four 2.5 inch squares; or a 2.5 inch square and a 2.5 x 6.5 inch strip. Smile

***I don't normally show my 'backside', but I'm hoping you can see how easily everything fit together and how I pressed my seams. Sometimes I press the little open 4-patch in the center of 4 segments, and sometimes it has to be pressed one way or the other so the seams will snug together.

Have fun!! Smile

Ivy opted not to do the broken dishes and other little blocks because she had a great border fabric~~ Smile Also notice how she changed the centers in some of the Churn Dash blocks? Another way to 'make it your own'!! Smile

I'm on vacation in Canada, raining here now. No sewing machine, but I was just thinking about this block. One of the quilts on the bed here has the weather vane block and was thinking about trying it. Weird Huh??? Can't wait to get home and give this a try.

Everyone's blocks are so pretty. I hope I get to do this BOM but I've not had time to start yet.

Becky, I like the way yours looks even if it's not what was intended. That block probably already has a name but if not, you could give it a name and pretend that's what you meant to do all along. LOL

Forgot to say: Congratulations fishingwidow!

STinMT...OMG woman! You do amaze me with getting THREE of these blocks made...with the small blocks...EVERY MONTH! They are all very interesting. Great job.

Here is my block for July. Quite a change for me to do pastels...my goal for this BOM is to learn how to piece traditionally better and to use stash. I have to say, I am starting to get the idea that you do have to measure very well for your pieces to fit. The other thing I am learning is that though you may measure, you can't just count on the 1/4 inch seam to get your points right...you have to move, push, pull, fanagle (sp?) to get some of them! For the most part I think my points are getting a little closer and I am pleased. I am also very happy that I have chosen to just make the main block this time around...

I am very impressed by all of you and your interesting and well executed blocks. Thanks for the inspiration!

Here it is...

Thanks QB! Wink

I really like the bears in your block STinMT. Great way to fussy cut!

And Alex, your block is lovely! I would say you have points mastered! Did you really have to do a lot of finagling, pushing, pulling to get everything to fit? Generally Marcia gives squaring up tips and if you square the pieces before sewing the block it comes out very well. I love your florals!

Thank you CBQ! I have to admit (guiltily) that I haven't exactly been squaring up the pieces (like the hst's) before attempting to piece the finished block. Guess I better get off the lazy seat and do it! I am understanding the basic directions of things a little better now than when we first started this.

Regarding my block, I do love the sweetness of it but I am afraid it is too pale to blend with my other blocks very well so I have found a deeper pink in my stash that I will be replacing the light pink pieces with at some point. You know, when you are an art quilter you just put stuff on and take it off if it doesn't work but this traditional piecing really takes much more planning and foresight into how the colors and values will play together.

Thank you all for putting up with my ramblings throughout this process! It has been fun (?) and a huge challenge for me. Oh, just kidding about fun or not...it definately has been fun and I have so enjoyed seeing all of your beautiful work!!
