Going to try not to check a bag on the plane, but would like to be able to bring small scissors, a 45 rotary cutter and an unopened package of blades. Does anyone know if these things will pass security for carry-on? Thanks!

But from experience, let me warn you -- not all TSA agents seem to have read that list! If they want to, they can say NO to any item at any time at any airport for no apparent reason...and I've seen them do it. Rule #1 is never argue with a TSA agent -- you'll get bumped from the flight and/or questioned at length!

I would say your rotary cutter and blades would be the first thing confiscated from a carry-on. Can you either ship them ahead or buy them when you get there, if you're not going to check a bag? I've shipped things ahead to hotels & asked them to hold them for me until I arrive. Just put Track & Confirm on the box so you know it got there. Same thing for getting stuff home -- I usually take a flat Priority Mail box with me in the bottom of my suitcase & ship any metal or sharp stuff home before I leave.

Edit to add -- It could be cheaper to ship ahead than to buy new or check a bag (usually runs me $25 to do that).

If u want scissors for sewing on the plane I've gotten by with a pair of child's blunt tipped fiskars & you're only out a buck or two if they snatch them. U could also use nail clippers for snipping threads

I've heard that you can take a bobbin & put it in an empty dental floss container & cut the thread with the cutter that originally cut the dental floss. Now how clever is that? I wish I could say that is an original idea.

I've gone thru Security with a carry-on & had "nothing suspicious" with me....I was moved right along.....then I left the gate area to go back to the lobby to get something to eat, and the 2nd time thru Security, 15 minutes later, was pulled aside & told that I had "something suspicious" in my bag. Now you know I didn't change one thing in that bag while eating lunch. So even on the same day with the same stuff in the same bag past the same TSA people, through the same x-ray machine, you can still have problems.

The only thing I could figure out was that my first time thru, there was a long line....my second time, there was no line. Oh, and my "suspicious" item was a set of antique glass candlesticks that I didn't want to pack in the checked bag. Yes, I was going to take the plane to Cuba with candlesticks, but they got me.

I don't trust TSA at any airport. Let's not even get into the time the airline gave me someone else's boarding pass at the ticket counter, and that cleared thru 2 security checkpoints & let me get on the plane & into that person's seat!

NO to rotary cutters! Scissors, maybe as long as they are under 4-5 inches with blunt tips.

I'm sure they will class rotary cutters in the same class a box cutters and they are a big time no no. (the both have razors edges)

If you ship with a priority box from the PO the small one will only be just over 5 doll@rs, that will hold your cutter, blades, smaller scissors and a few more things. It would definitely be a better deal than purchasing after landing, you would still need to get things back home again too.

I figured the rotary cutter wouldn't cut it, so to speak, but the wishful thinking in me was hoping someone had a travel story where they took it successfully in a carry on. Oh, well. Great ideas about the child's blunt scissors to work on something on the plane, and mailing the rotary items ahead of time. Going to do both of those. Thanks -- always lots of good tips, here!

I realy think that it is how it is packed. I have taken scissors (small embrodry scissors) on the plane. They were packed in the bigger of my 2 carrie on. I have also taken the same scissors on the plane to Haweeii. On my flight to the COF last year I had in my purse a stun gun, I was going to leave it at home but forgot that it was in my purse when I went to the airport. TSA didn't catch it both going and again in Va. on the way home.
Many years before 9-11 I was flying home from Boise, Id. As I went through the check point to get on the plane The woman who was doing the checking went through my suitecase she pulled out everything in my case. shook out all my thinks than she tossed everything back into my suitecase and closed it up. Every time I think of that woman I still get mad at her. So this all depends on weather or not the TSA agents are in a good mood or not.

Yeah, so much depends on the agent, that's y I didn't dare risk my good snips, but I dearly wanted to, lol. DH had a knife (he had forgotten) & there was the option of mailing back to yourself (i think DHS shipping?) but after he boxed it up & paid it still never made it home.

Several years ago, before the metal detectors, I had a plastic comb in my purse with a little metal on the end and another one just like it in my carry-on. I flew to my destination with no problem, but when at the airport to board my flt home I got through the X-ray machine fine and then was pulled aside and the comb in my carry-on was confiscated, but not the one in my purse. The funny thing was, the one in my carry-on had a couple of the metal prongs missing because the comb was broken. So who knows what they will decide to do. My DH and I were going to visit his family years ago when they first started searching through our purses by hand and didn't have any machines yet, a woman was pulling everything out and got to a small pouch with a sanitary pad in it. I told her what it was and asked her not to pull it out. She pulled it out and felt it all over, then stuffed it back in the pouch and let me go. I was so embarrassed and mad, I said nothing. I look back on it now and wish I had just thrown it out on the table and told her to keep it, it wasn't sanitary any more.

Just dont carry anything that you want to keep! And that is good advice!!!!

About a year after 911 DH and I were traveling to AK. and we had a duffle bag that had cold weather gear in it. Because of that bag all our suitcases were checked. At the airport before we could check the bag it was hand checked by the TSA. I was so glad that I had everything packed in 2 1/2 gallon zip lock bags. My stuff Was all packed neatly, but when they were done we could hardly close the bag. I've used the plastic bags several times since then and been happy my undies and things weren't being tossed around or touched by the TSA guys.

The most frustrating thing that happened to me was being at the airport and the flight being cancelled and the 8 or 10 of us were routed on a competitor flight. Our checked bags were returned to us so we had to go thru inspection by hand when we checked them with the new airline. Then at every step of the way, thru security and check in at the gate we were singled out for inspection. Got to be a joke amongst us... Chris

And they wonder why nobody enjoys flying anymore?????????? I won't do it unless there's just absolutely no other way to get to the destination.

And don't forget to ROLL ROLL ROLL your clothes. You can get TONS more in a bag when you roll them. And if you roll carefully you won't get wrinkles.
