Smile your very welcome ladies, these coasters are so easy it made the class a breeze.

I was gifted my first set of these by a friend who paid $12.00 at the craft fair for the set, and by that night I had sat down and made a set of my own...not sure if she did it the same way, but this is how I thought they were done...easy peasy!

TcMay gave a great tip about cutting the slit in the 5" hex before sewing... it would be easily done once they were traced, and before pinning the layers together. (why didn't I think of that --slapping forehead--) LOL!

Looking forward to seeing pics of finished coasters ladies...right now I have a hungry lil' man that has been patient to feed...BBL

Ahhhhh! That not what I was expecting at all...framing the focus fabric. I was worried about mitering the frame. WHEW! Much better and looks so easy.

Kentuck TY for a great tutorial. Can't wait to dig through the fabrics or - ta-da! go on a shopping spree. Big Grin

BTW, Spelling Bee results: 4th place out of 8 teams. Each team had 3 people. We could appoint a speller which we did...not me thank goodness. I just threatened our speller with her life if we were the first ones knocked out. Wink Everyone lasted 4 rounds. When the first team was knocked out, I told Speller to relax...she was safe. Big Grin

Lynne I KNOW you can do these! These would also be a great sew along to get kids involved...Caleb loves to help me! Of course his favorite part is picking fabrics so my stash is all messed up now...if I could just teach him to pack it all away...

LOL...Evelyn...it seems several of you sweet ladies were worried about mitered corners...I should have stated there were NONE in the class materials list...

I used to be afraid of mitered corners until I threw away all the fancy tools and instructions that made it seem complicated and just started using my iron to fold and crease then sewing on the crease, works everytime like a charm!

Okay....so I'm officially the last one to arrive!

::runs into the room all outta breath and hair standing on end....::

I tried to get here earlier but my wi-fi was acting up...Grrrr.

Thanks for the great lesson, Trish! Smile I, too, was afraid that there might be corner mitering, newbie that I am. So relieved to see that these are maybe even do-able for me! I'll have to go through the instructions a couple of more times more slowly, but I'll get it eventually. Razz Now I just to need to find some good fabrics for the fussy-cut parts.

Thanks again! Sorry I had to miss the live action, but looking forward to seeing everyone's coasters when they're done.

Great job to Nicki (she gave me a sneak peek) the night of the party and her coasters are adorable! Very nice finish to yours as well Karen Smile and yes they are quick and easy. Love those cupcake ones sewandsew, adorable! Thank you all for posting your pics!!!

It makes me giggle to think anyone could think these were hard, after you make a few you will giggle too...so easy!
Or to quote Karen "These were so simple"!!!

TcMay...THANK YOU for speaking up...I cut the slits on the kitty cat coasters after I had traced them, before pinning or sewing, and so much easier Smile

I finished my 2 sets I had cut out last night! Here's a pic of the kitty cats

Kentucky_Sunshine- I am jealous of that fabric! I was fortunate to spend 5-1/2 months in Melbourne back in 2006 at Deakin Uni as an exchange student, and spent many weekends going out to explore the wildlife and landscapes of your beautiful country. Great project as well!

I love what I'm seeing so far as a result of the pj party. I thought these were going to be hard too with the hexagon & all & wasn't sure how I was going to make those turns at each corner with binding. Ha! These were fast & simple.

Those are so cute, and perfect for Jayardi! I keep getting tempted to make some of these coasters. Thought about even making matching placemats using the same technique - just larger pieces. Rectangular would work but an elongated hexagon (whatever that is called) would be fun too.

Trish, you have a real winner with this class!

It would still be called a hexagon. We usually think of a hexagon as having all the sides the same length but any six-sided figure is a hexagon. If the sides are the same length then it is called a regular hexagon. I remember asking in a geometry class what the definition of a regular polygon is. I was expecting the answer "one whose sides are the same length" but instead one boy answered, with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, "one with lots of fiber in its diet."

Doesn't seem fair for quadrilaterals have different names for different shapes while the poor hexagons all have the same name. At least there are less names for us people to remember. Big Grin

Kaye Woods has something called view and do hexagon which makes up to 8". I would trace the largest several times making sure to have the edges meet. Then draw a line connecting the top and bottom and you would have an elongated hexagon pattern.

Sandy, I bought one set at a LQS here in Oz and the other was a gift, one set is a Marti Mitchell set...the set I bought here was $24.95

I saw them while in the states too, adding a link for you

on this site you can buy individual or a set from 1"-8" for $40.00....yikes...but then again mine only goes to 5"
