6. Once all 4 of the 5" hexagons have been sewn on the line, trim away excess fabric within 1/4" of sewn line with scissors...I usally always use pinking shears, but scissors are fine. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Kentucky_Sunshine,

OK...once you have trimmed all 4 the TRICKEST step to the whole process is the next step...
Pinch one of the hexagons you have just sewn between your fingers and pull up on the top layer that was traced on and down on the bottom fabric and batting to seperate the layers

Once you are certain you have the top layer seperated...it is very wise to slip a pin in and back out the top before reaching for your seam ripper (ask me how I know)This message has been edited. Last edited by: Kentucky_Sunshine,

missed your question DJ but just saw it and we will be turning them in just a sec
Now that we are confident we only have that TOP layer....take your seam ripper and slit a small straight line in the middle, you will use this cut line to turn your hexies right side out. Do this with all 4 hexagon shapes, making sure corners are nice and sharp...and then back to the ironing board for a nice press.

Now that little cut you just made...turn those hexies right side out by pushing through that slit...making sure you get all the points... the handle of a small artist paintbrush or any small blunt object will work fine to help get the shape...This message has been edited. LOL DJ I was never able to sit quietly in class, and my teacher would quite often have me entertain the class by standing in front of her desk and reciting poetry or reading
Now we take one of those 4" hexies which has already had the fusible added and lay it on our nice pressed 5" hexie...AND it covers up and HIDES that little slit nicely and the fusible will also seal it...make sure you center it by using a ruler, tape line or eyeballing it before pressing in place with the hot ironThis message has been edited. heartmania, I'll keep those peanut butter trees on my desk while you catch up...mmmmmmm my favorite! LOL
Now once we have all of those 4" hexagons fused to our 5" hexagons...we just mosey back over to the sewing machine...and begin our blanket stitch...
I would also recommend that you take a scrap bit that you cut off with all 3 layers to do a test blanket stitch on, to make sure the tension is right before you begin stitching on your coasters...This message has been edited. Last edited by: Kentucky_Sunshine,

I twisted my wrist cleaning out my cupboards today. Can't cut or sew but I thought I'd check in. So far looks easy and the instructions and pix are very clear. I can't wait to be able to make a few of these next week. Good job, teach. In the meantime, my glass of wine and a Hershey bar are working for me.
WOW Trish those are nice!!! I just may have to get my Janome back from DD. All I have here are old Singer machines that make wonderful straight stitches.

I really think I need a set of these.
DJ I taught my sis how to make these while in KY...her machine is only a straight stitcher, and I just used a lightweight single side fusible and stitched it with the fusible side facing the right side of the 4" hex and then slit the fusible, turned right side out and fused in place and used her straight stitch to stitch about 1/8" all the way around....and mmmm...ohhhhh what peanut butter trees This message has been edited. Once all 4 have been blanket stitched...you are done and have yourself a nice set of coasters, or a nice little gift for a friend. Hope you enjoyed the class and I made everything easy for you to follow along...please post pics of your finished costers

Your very welcome ladies...they are pretty cute and easy...I usually mark my 5" hex shapes, and cut out and fuse my 4" hex shapes all at once, then when I sit down to sew I can complete about 4 sets in an hour

May...you just made me have a dugh...moment...I don't see why that slit can't be cut once the 5" hexagons have been traced...LOL...that bright idea would have sure saved me a boo-boo or two on my first couple of these

CBQ that roo fabric was what I had purchased and made my siggy blocks out of...that got left behind...
Caleb always gets the first and usually the last peanut butter tree...lol
Karen...when you are using 3 fabrics...one is the backing...two is the front that frames the third which is the focus fabric. If you look at the birds coasters they both have 3 fabrics.
The green is the 1 (backing) the gold is 2 (front/framing) 3 is the fussy cut 4 " hexThis message has been edited. Last edited by: Kentucky_Sunshine,

Karen you know the fabric you cut the slit in... that would be your # 2 fabric if you were using 3 fabrics... the backing would be different from the top one you trace the hex on and cut the slit in.
If only 2 fabrics are used then your backing and framing would be the same fabric number 1...and your number 2 fabric would be the fussy cutThis message has been edited. Last edited by: Kentucky_Sunshine,

Well, I sort of caught up & have made one. I decided to only make one so I could be sure & get it done during the party. I'm going to send this set to one of our board members & can't show the front side because I want it to be a suprise & if she sees it she will definately know they are going to her. That being said...I've posted the back for y'all to see. I'll make the other ones tomorrow. These were really easy & my favorite part of the whole process was getting to use my ripper!!! Thanks Trish!!!
