Hi girls!

WELL! I got the call from the bride today! She is super easy going, fantastic and sweet!

She is expecting 200 guests, would like a lap sized quilt, quilted simply (so i'll be doing a meander).

Colors are: gold, burgundy, and gold. I'd like to throw some fairy frosts in their if they're still available.

Guests will be signing blocks at the wedding and i will be piecing them after the wedding. She wants something festive and pretty but usable.

I started thinking of maybe a 9 patch, alternating with a solid muslin block - which would be the siggy block. Or i can even frame the muslin block with a fabric...

Can you girls help me think of a simple design/block, lap sized with about 100 sign-able blocks?

i quoted her $400-$500. too much, not enough? just right?

xoxo

OLD POST
well, well, well!

Allan's sister Heather is an event planner. She started maybe about a year ago and her business just took off! She's planning quite a few weddings/b-day parties atm and a few weeks ago she e-mails me (this is the short version) "omg so this bride wants her guests to sign quilt blocks instead of a guest book!!! have you ever heard of anything like that?! And i told her you quilt and she's willing to hire you b/c she was going to WING IT!"

So i don't do well with large projects. She is expecting 150-200 guests. I told her i'd think about it, but i was nervous of screwing up someone's WEDDING quilt! She reassured me that if the bride was going to wing it, anything i came up with just HAD to be better!

2 days ago i finally told her i'd just ask my quilting teacher if she wanted to do it b/c i was too intimidated! So she said ok.

Today i was telling my mom about all of this and she said "you're stupid, you can totally do this and i'll come over to help as much as i can"

So i called Heather back, and she was coincidentally meeting with that bride today! I got a text message tonight that said "you're hired! will email later"

She needs the quilt blocks by December, but i'd rather have the whole quilt top ready to be signed so it can hang on display. (of course freezer paper ironed to the back of all the muslin siggy pieces)

SO HERE IS WHERE I NEED SOME HELP PLEASE (i'm begging!)

Can you girls help me come up with a thorough list of questions? I know some of the basics (which i will list) I will compile the list here (in case anyone else needs it).

Also can you please suggest sizes with prices both for a quilt top alone and then a quilted top?

I am going to tell the bride i will probably not quilt it if she wants something very fancy i'd like to get ms. Quiltaholic's prices to show the bride Smile Q, i've seen your work and it's to dye for! If she doesn't want anything fancy, it's going to be a meander by me on the long arm.

Questions:
1. What is your color scheme(s)?
2. does the bride want the blocks only so she can put it together? or - does she want a completed quilt done by you?
3. will the signing be done the day of the wedding or does she want to send them to all the guests, which will allow them more time to do something.
4. How would you like the guests to sign the blocks? One block per family or... ______???

found this pricing guide: http://www.elegacyquilts.com/price_guide.htm

• • • How cool it that?

My first question would be does the bride want the blocks only so she can put it together? or - does she want a completed quilt done by you?

Then you need to decide if she wants just squares or actual blocks.

• • • Another thing you need to consider, will the signing be done the day of the wedding or does she want to send them to all the guests, which will allow them more time to do something (really) nice.

You may want to get a really good photo of the bride and groom and use it in the quilt too. Photographer may give you permission to use one of their photos.

Congatulations Talia !!!!
I agree with your Mom ,
YOU can sooo do this !!!!!!
I am not much technical help but wanted to add my congrats !
I would ask the Bride:
What does she see when she envisions the end product.
Get her to narrates while she visualizes.
What does she plan on doing with it afterwards?

Brides I have worked with in the past sometimes dream or want something that is not close to being feasable LOL

Thats all I can think of Right now !

WAY TO GO !!!!!!

Does she want the signatures embroidered over or is she going to use an indelible ink. Elenor Burns had one that she made with all the famous Quilt teachers signatures. It was a nice pattern.

I did a crayon quilt for my mom for christmas and mailed the blocks to each of the kids and grandkids. I ironed freezer paper tot he back of each block and included a letter explaining what I was doing and what they needed to do. I also included a SASE so the block could be sent back to me.
My question to the bride is
1. who does she want to sign the blocks?
2. Would she like to send the blocks in advance to all with SASE or would she like to included them with the Invites to be mailed back with the RSVP's which would probably mean the quilt would be done after the wedding.
3. Does she want just their signature or would she like words of advice or blessings to the bride and groom.
4. what's the color scheme

Good luck I think this will be a cherished quilt

Lisa

What fun!
Does she like traditional or modern? Flowery or plain? White or off? Brights or subdued? Show her some quilts to get a feel for whether she's a homespun/scrappy type or a sophisticated/elegant gal. For instance - my SIL hates busy scrappy quilts. She likes lots of white plain space.

I don't know about trusting people to get the signed blocks back to you....stuff happens and people forget....

I would have them sign at the wedding......of course ...then the quilt wouldn't be done........unless you did the quilt......and had them sign within perameters.......but the thing with that is.....if they goof up........welll that could be a mess......

i just don't think peeps would be good about getting the fabric back to you in a timely fashion..... Roll Eyes

Talia-For my In-Laws 50th Anniversary my SIL had a quilt at the party and we all signed it. It was a finished quilt and we used the marking pens. My DFIL still has it and it still looks great.

Since this is to be the "guest book" not the "also invited" guests, I would have it prepared and signed at the wedding. You could also have some extra blocks available for those who mess up and replace the messy one with a good later.

I would just have the top available and layer and quilt it later. You could even sew the binding on the top of the quilt to help hold all the seams at the edge and reduce the fraying of the fabrics.

I would also just use a fabric/scrapbooking marker/pen. Creative Memories scrapbooking company has some good markers/pens for that. My daughter has said that they are better than the pigma pens I have used too.

I'm working on my daughter's wedding quilt now. BUT lots of relatives couldn't come so we sent out blocks for them to sign and return. Some people just needed to be in the quilt. We had the blocks at the engagement party, at wedding showers, and the wedding (in different states. I asked for a signature,a drawing, or advice (funny or not). The blocks are WONDERFUL! I'm still getting them. My deadline to put them together is August. I chose 30s fabrics in every color so I wouldn't have to worry about running out of fabric. I used Kona for the signatures. I did a square in a square and made them oversized, sewing the freezer paper into two seams so it wouldn't come off. Now I need to press them, square them up, and put them together. It's so unique and worthwhile. I am going to leave some blocks unsigned in case we missed someone. A finished quilt top (unquilted) would have been much faster and my preference if I were being paid to do it.

Congratulations on the job. I just finished one for my son's teacher. I secretly had all the kids sign a plain white block and then made the blocks with them. Sometimes a kid would mess up and I had extras so there was no ruining something I had spent time on.

I don't think you should have it completed for the wedding. Too many variables. It will be a nice remembrance sometime later. Just my 2 cents.

I did a wedding quilt for a wedding that took place in another state! I sent the fabric with a note made into a pretty booklet to be put on each table, included pigma pens (they do NOT bleed.)I used iron on bias tape for the lines , had the bride bring them home and used wedding photos that I scanned and used BubbleJet Set to print them, see my alblum.

The quilt that I did for a wedding had to be done for the day and to be signed that day. Yeh go me for taking that one on, but I did. I made a fan quilt that eah person got to sign a blade of the fan. The reason I did that type was that she was going to have 300 guests and I could not make a quilt that big.

Needless to say I was very uneasy about it, but it turned out to be beautiful.

In order for people to sign were I wanted at the time I used a little frame to hold the fabric tant enough for them to sign and it stop people from signing in akward places that might not get filled.

Good luck and just remember they will love what you dobecause it will not have been done at any of their friends weddings.

That was exactly what I was wondering about. That's an awesome number of people and you're smart to do such a unique design. Fans are my favorite quilt block too but sooo much work! Hope you did it from love and not money. You'd never get paid enough.

I am currently doing a signature quilt from our family reunion last year. I started with 6 1/2 inch blocks and then got on eq 6 and designed a quilt around them. I am doing one similar to the ocean waves pattern(kind of). Anyhoo, you might need to think about smaller pieces for the signatures. I like the ideaof the fan quilt with siggys being on each blade. If yu did the fan then you could have family's sign on each fan, onep
