Square in a Square in a Box Swap DUE DATE: MARCH 1, 2013 Pattern from Quick and Easy Quilting Magazine, April 2002. Here is the link to the free pattern: http://www.free-quilting.com/d...e=FQ00163&cat_id=435 You will need to get the quilt block instructions from the site listed above, but if you want me to mail you a copy of the pattern, let me know and I will mail it to you. No worries. Woot, woot! We will be using 1930’s prints. 100% quality cotton. Washed and ironed before you start cutting. Blocks will be constructed in the manner shown. Half of the blocks you send in will have a PASTEL SOLID for the 4 corners/second square and the other half will either be white or white on white. Number of blocks to make and mail to the individuals in the swap will be determined by the number of swappers signing up at the end of the sign up date, August 15th. As an added note, if there is an “odd” number of players, we will go to the next higher number for making blocks so we each end up with 36 blocks. **Make sure this is a quilt you want to make, because the rest of us will be DEPENDING on YOU to finish all the blocks for each of our quilts.** COLORS for the blocks: 1) Red 2) Blue 3) Green 4) Yellow 5) Purple 6) Aqua 7) Orange 8) Peach 9) Pink 10)Lavender The colors listed above were gotten from this link: http://www.reproductionfabrics.com/shelf.php?ID=7 The pastels must be solid and DO NOT have to be “reproduction” pastels, BUT THEY MUST MATCH the block color and NOT BE OF A THIN QUALITY as is with the white and WOW material. There are some that do not have a pastel solid (in the chart above) and what they do show does not look very pastel in color. You Do Not have to order from this site, it is only for a lookie see. I am all about finding the right fabric at the right cost to you. When you choose a color, any and all colors in that color scheme are applicable. If you choose red, you can use a light red, medium red, dark red, brick red, what ever 1930's reds you can find. But you can not use Pink as that is a separate color in the 30's color scheme. Any questions, give me a hoot! Construction of the block: (group 1) The center block will be a “light” colored print of the color you signed up for. The middle will be a pastel color. The outer square will be a “dark” colored print of the color you signed up for. You will need to follow the directions of making the blocks in the link listed above. Blocks that are poorly made can or will be sent back to the maker by the receiver with a clear explanation of why it is being sent back. When you are finished sewing a block, let it rest a day before you square it up. So it may be best to make the box strips on the bigger side (ie, cut one or two threads bigger so there is enough to cut off when squaring up. Or when sewing this section of the block, sew a scant ¼” seam, don’t include one or two threads on the block side. This is a great general rule to follow on all blocks that are being sent in a swap.) In the event that we have 11 swappers or more, starting at swapper 11, I will reverse the COLORED PRINTS (not the pastel) in the blocks for sign ups, creating group 2. (Dark in the middle and a light outer boarder.) You CAN then sign up for two should you so desire! (You will get a bigger quilt this way as well!) Whew. And now, if you still want to play, PM me with the following information: Color choice #1, #2, #3 and #4. Your name, Board name and Complete Mailing Address, E-mail address and Phone # (which will be kept confidential and only for being in touch with me) And if you are interested in sewing a second set along with choices #1 - #4 in a second group. Mailing Directions: Depending on how many blocks you will be sending to each individual, put them in a sealed plastic bag inside your envelope. Use the complete mailing address of each of the participants. Be sure to include your name, board name and address inside the bag in case the envelope gets damaged and so we know who sent the lovely squishy!! In the early part of February, I will send out a mailing list to each swapper. This will be your final reminder to get those blocks in envelopes and ready to mail by February 14th. I think we all should try and keep in touch on the board… so stop in and just say HI on the thread and to keep it close to first page as possible. I may be away from time to time as I do work in 13 day stretches at a crack. I just may be a wee bit tired until I get my weekend off and recoop some. Thanks in advance for this consideration. This message has been edited. Last edited by: ~Patch, ~Patch We can have more than we've got, because we can become more than we are. --Jim Rohn

Just a few questions to clarify some things. Are we to send blocks to each individual rather than send them all to you for you to divide up? That's fine if that's what you mean but it will take more postage that way. That may make a difference to some people on whether or not they participate. When you say pastel, do you mean a solid pastel? That's what the picture looks like but I just want to be sure. Should all of the blocks we make use the same fabrics or different fabrics or does it matter? I have lots of small pieces of 30s that I'd like to use but probably not enough of any to make as many blocks as needed for the swap.

Great questions! I was thinking of sending to individuals, but if it works better, to send them to me and I return them to the swappers, that works for me as well. Either way is fine with me. As for the pastels, yes ma'am! Solid pastels. Thanks for pointing that out. As for colors... would you all like it better if you just sent in what you have in your stash vs. colors? I don't have a stash of 30's so I just thought it would be easier to pick a color and go from there. A couple more people stating to send in what they have from stash and I will change the rules for that. No problem! ~Patch We can have more than we've got, because we can become more than we are. --Jim Rohn

Choosing colors is fine. What I meant to ask is if I need to use the same fabric for all the blocks. For example, if my color is green, could I use three different green fabrics for the centers and three other greens for the outside? I have a lot of variety in my stash but not a lot of each piece. It would be easier (and cheaper) for swappers to send all blocks to you. But that would mean more work for you. You are the hostess so you can decide. But here's a suggestion: if we send to you, we could have the blocks divided for individual swappers by putting 4 (or the number needed for each person) in separate baggies. Also, if you decide to do it this way, we could each send you a SASE. I can't believe there aren't lots of people signing up for this swap! Are you getting PM's about it?

Mary Lou, You have been the only person so far... Could be some are away and vaca? But we have time before a decision is made if the demise of this swap is in order. But I should have been more specific in the colors... Yes, if you choose red, you can use all shades of red, but not pink as that is a different color catagory. I will put that additional info in the guidelines. I guess it has been some time since I hosted. Yikes! ~Patch We can have more than we've got, because we can become more than we are. --Jim Rohn

In the picture of the original quilt there are some that have a white for the 2nd color (background for the center square). White seems to be the choice fabric in '30s quilts, and not an off white. (Which I think makes the colors pop, but many do not like white fabrics.) Would that be acceptable? I am interested in this swap, but am trying to make sure that I get an idea of the colors right before committing. Just to make sure that I have the right fabrics to work with. Thanks,

I was thinking about it and then the pastel thing....I didn't know if they were solids...AND you had to join to get their pattern. Could you make a sample block and take a picture of exactly what you're looking for?
|
I would love to make a sample block and post, but I don't have a camera that works, unfortunately, and I have to get a micro link for my phone. Can't quite get there yet, but working on it for the camera situation. I am quite bummed for sure. I am thinking that I will make the swap half white and half solid pastel. So depending on the number we make, half can be solid white, the other half solid pastels. What are your thoughts on that? True to the pattern... and that way maybe more will sign up as well. ~Patch We can have more than we've got, because we can become more than we are. --Jim Rohn

Sometime it helps to look at the picture. The only solid I see is in the very center(2nd round)...and they all coordinate with the center square and sashing which are prints. I suspect when it doubt or for lack of choices a few white and off white were used in this quilt. I do not think you can go wrong by mixing them up as long as it is coordinated in whole.Just my 2 cents May "In Michigan" ![]()

Sure wish I would have looked at this before doing the shop hop here the last couple of days. I don't have anything pastel in solids
|
I don't own a single solid either. Crazy, huh? So I'm going to try out the pattern with the white and think about this. I'm still not getting why you use a doubled piece of fabric (the folded triangle) for the corners. I'll try and see what happens.
|
Here's my attempt with a white on white in the center. Only WHITE I had too!
|
Reba, I think the folded corner was just an additional way to make the block. ~Patch We can have more than we've got, because we can become more than we are. --Jim Rohn

Great block by the way~ Just what we are looking for! ~Patch We can have more than we've got, because we can become more than we are. --Jim Rohn

Yes I folded it and made a crease and then UNfolded it and stitched ON the line made by the crease. Then I cut off the excess block and white corner. Is that what you are supposed to do?
|
okay i would like to play. i prefer to use whats in my stash, also i would prefer to send them to one central point and then hae them come back. jmho do i need to send a pm to patch? tami
|

Woot Woot, we have some players signing up! I will have to post a list of names tomorrow, and make the change to the colors to what ever is in your stash and to make half with solid pastels and the other half with white or WoW. This is what is coming across as to what you want to play so it shall be done! We as well have a player who want to send in two sets already!!! I have to get to bed already.... making hearing aid batteries tuckers me out, big time and it's half century for me tomorrow and need to make a treat yet for work.... sleep tight everyone. ~Patch We can have more than we've got, because we can become more than we are. --Jim Rohn

posting this from fb for ~Patch Marcia Lobby LeeHGTV Quilters on Facebook Would one of you be so kind as to post on HGTV that I am having problems getting logged and staying connected in over there! You can either make a general post or go to my "1930's Square in a Square in a Box Swap" and let them know. I will try again tomorrow after work. I was going to make a list of swappers and an update to the guidelines. I think I got part of the update on there, but not sure if all of it posted or not. Thank you oodles! Marcia/ ~Patch.
