In the Great Granny Square and Granny Square posting we talked about the small design boards that Lori Holt from http://beeinmybonnetco.blogspo...-board-tutorial.html
gives a tutorial for.
I am posting 2 pics of the boards I made this week, one is of the boards and the other a close up of the stitching on the edges to give you an idea of how I jazzed them up a bit..
The boards were super easy to make. I bought my large foam boards at WalMart for $1.40, cut them in 2 and they measure to 15 x 20. I used odd pieces of batting I had leftover from other projects some leftover binding strips that I added decorative stitches.
I go to Fall Quilt Retreat this coming week and am giving each of my roommates one as a gift. The boards look so colorful and work great to lay out a block and carry it with you to the machine.

Thanks for bringing this up. When I read the tutorial for the granny square quilt, I was really taken by the idea of these design boards. Too cute! I love the way you added decorative stitching on your binding strips. What a wonderful gift for your roomies! My husband ran for a local office last year. We have all of his signs left and I plan to cut a couple of them up to make design boards!!

Kim I like Lori Holt also. I have finished all of my Great Granny Squares. The boards I made hold up a 14"block which is plenty big for me.
I am making lots of 3 1/2" 9-patch blocks and bowtie blocks and I put them on one of boards to see what colors I have used.

Susan...what a great idea to use up the leftover signs! I will be on the lookout for them in the future!

i made my design boards 12 x 12. i burned my fingers twice and it actually blistered. i find if u use a toothpick to help guide the fabric around the edges onto the glue instead of your hand or fingertips, u might avoid that. i like that u used a decorative stitch, i am going to try that next. thanks for sharing. i must say it was not easy to cut the board. my edges were really messed up, but it was covered with the fabric so i didn't stress about it.

mandylifeboats.... I used the cool glue gun, it is suppose to be cooler then the hot glue guns, safe for school projects. They are the small ones sold at WalMart and craft stores. I could actually work with the glue and not burn my fingers, the glue really cooled off fast.
The edge I cut off I did with a very sharp pointed pocket knife, just put my ruler where I wanted to cut and slowly scored a line as deep as I could.
I used some old scissors to finish the cutting. The fabric does a good job of hiding the jagged edges Smile . I did time myself when glueing the fabric to the edges, I did 4 boards in 48 minutes which I thought was pretty good for gift giving.
What boards I have I have really used. I can stack them up and keep on sewing without getting up to get each block.

I bought some boards at Wal-Mart over the weekend that were already cut into smaller pieces. I'll look when I get home, but I think they were like 12 x 10. I haven't had time to make the design boards yet. Maybe tonight.

I bought my foam boards at the dollar store and returned the ones from Walmart. Same boards just saved a little money. I also cut them up and use them to wrap fabric on for short term storage.

This is a great idea! When I was teaching both of my classes at retreat, I could have used these!

Yeppers...think I might have to find my ancient glue gun, those are really cool tools and so purty too.

i dont have a glue gun..

but gonna make these just stitching pillowcase style then finishing the end..

i got my boards at Dollar Tree for $1 and cut it into 3 different sizes - first cut was 12 1/2" square and then what ever the rest cut to..

on the largest board piece i was thinking that i could even make the back as a note station with the ribbons across the fabric to hold pictures, notes, etc. and and handle to hang on the wall.. this way it would be double sided use..

Hugs, Waves, Smiles, & Prayers

God bless you all and may sunshine always be in your lives to brighten your days..
