I have been going through my scrap box cutting blocks from 6.5 inches down to 2 inches anything smaller than 2 inches went into a crumb pile. Anything that was way to small to do any thing with got introduced to file 13.
Now for my question. strips that are more than 6.5 inches long and 1.5 inches wide I set aside for string blocks. What is the average size in weith do you use for string blocks?

I save anything 1" or wider. Not that I've used them, but I save them.

I use anything from 1" to 3" in the same block but if you want a uniform size it is usually 2.5". Also a lot depends on what size you are making the finished block. 2.5" would be pretty big for a 6" block and all 1" would be on the small side for a 12" block or 16" block. It is whatever looks good to you... Chris

My strings are usually 1 to 2 1/4 inches wide. I like the center strip to be the widest - around 2.5 inches. An occasional 3/4 inch, but not too many narrow ones. It would depend on your desired block size too.

I may have to trim my scraps too. They're getting out of hand! Maybe some 3.5 x 6.4 bricks and 3.5 inch squares. Also 5 inch squares to add to charm packs.

Good luck!

do you cut your strings striaght or wonky?

I love wonky when I see it, but it wigs me out to sew a block crooked. As my bud Helen says, "I'm going way out of my comfort zone"...and she's producing such beautiful (and FINISHED) quilts!

I like my comfort zone Frown
