It's been YEARS since i've sewn actual clothing! My DIL has asked me to make some pjs and sundresses for my DGKs. Do I get patterns based on the ready to wear clothing sizes or do i need to measure the kids? Do patterns run true to size? Any other things i need to know? thanks! Char

You really need to measure them. Michelle

I would measure the kids and compare to the pattern. Handie Ann

measure the kids. Plus keep in mind patterns always call for too much fabric.

I just made my GD a sundress and made a 7. We have been buying her a 6X-7. It is too big and I have to take it in before I line the top part. I have always thought that clothing patterns run a little large. I feel it is easier to adjust the size when they are too big on them instead of too small. Measuring her is probably the best bet, but it isn't always feasable for me as they don't live close by. Have fun. Hi Char, I have been sewing clothing for 25 years or so. All types -- kids, teens and adult. I have found the patterns tend to be a size or two too large depending on the manufacturer of the patterns. I would suggest taking measurements. PJs can be a little big, they grow into them so fast but sundresses could be a problem. Any more questions contact me direct. I would be glad to help. Quilter Chris

Butterick patterns are especially large! DGD is still in the height/weight category. I mailed a dress Monday and she should receive it today. Yes, I am a bit anxious about whether it fits. Measure the kids, and buy the size that is called for by the measurements. That way, it will be a tad big and they will grow into the outfits. If you can't measure the kids, get their mom to do it. It only takes a couple of minutes with a tape measure. If she doesn't have one of those, use a piece of string and then measure the string with any kind of ruler or metal tape measure.
