Hello Ladies, I thought I would post the supply list for the class on January 4 so that while you are out and about you can pick them up.

Supplies:

91% Isopropyl Alcohol

spray bottle

pre-washed white Kona Cotton (you can use muslin but Kona makes it look nicer)

Sharpie permanent markers in as many colors as you can find

plastic to cover work area

More plasic to lay on the floor to let it dry

Joyce did you see the recent The Quilt Show with the gal who makes the quilts with tiny pieces...I'm having a senior moment.(Cindy WALTER)!!..and she demonstrates painting on fabric with some fabric paint and then squirting water over it and it comes out looking like batik? It's gonna come to me as soon as I walk away. Anyhow, it looked really fun and I might take your class even though I'm GOOD FOR NOTHIN in the evening! I'll look it up and come back and edit this post.

Where do you find 91% alcohol? We use 70% for our business. What is the difference between them? Will it affect the outcome?

More commonly know as rubbing alcohol. Find it at WM, drug stores, etc.

I just asked hubby the difference between 70% and 91% alcohol (other than the 91% has more alcohol in it--we all can figure that part out!)

He said he thought that the 70% dried/evaporated faster than the 91%, so that would make a difference in the spread/blending of markers, etc.

It would be interesting to see how the same project turns out different with each.

Please forgive the retired chemist for butting in one more time.............

NT Quilter is correct - 70 has more water in it than 91% does. The dyes in the marker are at least partially soluble in isopropanol, not at all soluble in water so the more isopropanol the more the dye molecules will migrate. The amount of separation of colors in the marker may be different with the two different concentrations of alcohol...........

Martha - so this makes me curious...would the colors stay bright with 91% or 70%?

I'm not up on the nomenclature for colors. The color should be less intense after it is spread over a larger area. Is that less bright? Individual hues may be more pure after they are separated from the other dyes. Could that make them enough more bright to compensate for the dilution? I don't know.

I juuuuust saw this method used on a scarf in one of the latest magazines. Not sure which one it was, but it was one I picked up @ JA's last week. If I can find where I put it (under Christmas stuff AND Cold-Eze boxes AND Kleenex boxes...), I'll update.

I don't use Sharpies on quilt labels because I've seen the colors separate over time, no alcohol involved, and even on paper. OK, I do admit to using a fine black Sharpie to touch up stray white bobbin threads on quilted black fabric, but if it comes off later, too bad. "Must have been something you did to the quilt..." NT Quilter, have you tried this with cheaper brands not just Sharpies? l'm wondering b/c l used cheaper markers with my DGD's this summer when we tie dyed T-shirts. The colors faded out some when washed. l wondered if Sharpies would have been better?

======================
l would be unstopable IF l could get started!!!

The magazine where I saw this technique was Quilting Arts Gifts:

http://www.quiltingdaily.com/b...gifts-2012-2013.aspx

It was the "Magic Marker Scarf," but it's not a clickable link there.

I never get to do the Friday night parties because grandson always spends the night with me on Friday night. I will get my supplies and try to follow along on Saturday or Sunday afternoon when I am alone

OO I like that and you can get the alcohol at CVS too! Now all you need to do is size the pictures a bit smaller so they fit the screen. I take them to PAINT and resize to about 520 pixels.
