I am a Blue Star Mom, was wondering if any of you have ever made a Blue Star Mom quilt or wall hanging? I would like to make one for my front door (the storm door) as its glass and could be seen from the street, while being protected from the weather.
The glass in the door measures 29" wide X 79" long, I would appreciate any suggestions you could share, as to the width of the red border, white background and size of blue star across, in the center.
My other question is, would it be alright to have my "Air Force Angel's" name and United States Air Force embroidered on the red border, and where?
I would appreciate all the suggestions you can share. Thank You for your time.

I think you are describing the Armed Services Flag. You could follow those measurements, or modify as desired. The only consideration if adding a name would be privacy issues. I think about people around us that put signs in their yard with their child's name and graduating class. You don't always know who will be wandering the neighborhood and may want to protect that information.

Good luck on your project!

Marty, the site that Lisa gave is a good one. I see nothing wrong in putting your son's name and emblem on the BACK of the hanging. That way just those that are in your home would see it and not just anyone coming to your door or passing by. And would not deface the hanging in anyway. Maggie

I just bought the McCalls "America Loves Scrap Quilts" issue. It has Service Star quilts with instructions on pages 16-19. Also a brief history of the service flag. Maybe that would help.

This is great. Thanks Lisa for the link and Brandy for the info about the McCalls Magazine.
Darn I was just at Walmart. Have to go back.
I have a good friend who has 5 grandsons in the service and I think two are in or have been in Irac.
I will make one for her birthday which is the official Memorial Day, May 31st.
She really loves to decorate patriotic and will love this. It looks like a quick project.
Thank you Blue Star Mom for the thread.
Hope you get to do yours for your door.

Thank You for all the responses, and yes my Angels name and branch of military on the back is a great idea. Have seen the link and love it, go back and read it over and over.
Thought my only other option was to use gallery glass and paint it on the glass, but I like the quilt idea much better.

Thank You again,
militarymom

Greetings from southern Oklahoma, its a wet one here today and tonight. Should be wet though tomorrow, then clear off.
The priviledge is all ours, as my Angel would say, "Its an Honor, to be among so many Heroes, past, present and future".

I made one for my neighbor when her son went over 'there' for the second time. I didn't know about the flag the first time. When I handed it to her and she unrolled it, her husband who served in W W II in Italy smiled and asked her if she knew what it was...she didn't. He nodded to me, so I explained it. She nearly cried she was so proud.

Sherry,
What a wonderful thing you did for your Friend, I know she will cherish it for many years to come.
I like your Friend, wasn't aware the Armed Services Flag, till my Mom asked me about it, she was surprized I had no clue. So she told me to google, The Sullivan Brothers, they were from Waterloo, Iowa. I grew up in Iowa, and they were from a town two hours from my home. Its a very sad but moving story.
Can't Thank You enough, for all the links and wonderful suggestions, this will be a labor of Love. One of the links said that by law it is only to bemade with measurements of 14 x 9 inches with a 6" star. Still wondering about this, as I was in hopes of making a large enough one for the glass panel in my front door, its the storm door with one glass panel the full width and length. The other option is to make several of these made like quilt block, sewn together, what do you suggest? Please let me know how would you go about this.
Thank You in advance.

What a sad story about the Sullivan Brothers. My Dad and all 5 of his brothers served in WW II but, thankfully, all returned home safely (at least physically, one brother suffered mentally until his death a few years ago). Dad and two other brothers were in the Navy, one was in the Air Force and the other two in the Army. I was born while Dad was on a ship near Guam, he didn't see me until I was 6 months old. I can't imagine how difficult that time was for all the men and their families.

About 3 1/2 years ago, I made a Blue Star Banner for my DB and DSIL when my nephew was deployed. Unfortunately, a few months later, there was a need for a Gold Star Banner for them. Next Monday it will 3 years since we lost Wyatt and the whole family still misses him.

My dad was also in the South Pacific during WW*II, on Peleliu. I know my GM had a Blue Star banner. This has got me wondering what ever happened to it.
I think this is a wonderful idea militarymom!

Militarymom and others....
You could still make your flag the right size but put it against another banner with patriotic colors or prints so that it fits the window/door or whatever. You'd be keeping to the letter of the law but covering the glass area.

Our American Legion Commander, has made sure I have the Armed Services Flag in the correct size. So I will hang this and only this in my front door. This is in respect of regulations, that you were so kind to point out to me, I feel like I'm headed in the right direction now.
I apologize to anyone I might have offended, with my wanting to make this larger than the guide lines state. This was before I did some further research and you were so kind to help me understand.
Thank You from the bottom of my heart, I really appreciate it.
With this message board I knew it was the right place to ask, you have helped more than you know.

Sincerely
militarymom

Sure hope you don't think you offended me, 'cause you didn't.

Also having lived through both Asian situations during the 50's and 60s/70s I am pleased to see the pride being displayed with the current crisis.

paus4quilts,
My intention was not to offend you or any of my cyber friends, just wanted to let all of you know how much I appreciate all the suggestions and help you so graciously gave me.
Again, please accept my heartfelt Thank You, I learned alot and will continue to do so, with your help.
Thought you would like to know, I washed the glass in the storm door, (winter was tough on it, hate to admit how dirty it was) and hung the Armed Services Flag on my door this evening, in its rightful place of Honor.

Sincerely
militarymom
Marty
