Several years ago I had nearly finished an applique quilt top I was making for my DD. I wasn't sure what borders I wanted to put on it so I tossed it aside and figured something would come to me eventually. Well, life got in the way as it tends to do, and the top was crumpled up in a sewing basket for a loooong time, till one day I decided to get organised. I neatly folded the top with the white foundation side out to protect the colored fabric from dust and sun fading, and put it.... somewhere! I had no idea where!! I have searched for that foolish thing for 3 YEARS and never found it. I could remember quite clearly deciding to put it away, folding it, and cleaning out the basket. But I had no memory whatsoever of what I did with it then. I looked for it as recently as a few months ago when my DD asked what had ever become of it and would I ever finish it. It never turned up and I had tuned my sewing room and bedroom upside down looking for it any number of times.
So today I was in the sewing room looking for some fabric to make DD a skirt and I started rummaging through a pile of old sheets I keep on hand to make muslin mockups of garment patterns, and you guessed it! Right in the center of all the sheets, looking like just another folded up white sheet was my quilt top!!! I have no idea what I was thinking when I put it there where it would be camoflaged by the real sheets, but I am so happy I found it!! I took it out and spread it on the bed and decided I am going to put the borders on PRONTO before I lose it again! I put on a narrow inner border right away-- I mean, I wasn't even out of my pj's yet! Then I went to Joann's tonight to get more Kona white so I could do the rest this week. As soon as the borders are done I'll post a picture----That is, if I can find my camera, which I have also lost! Anyway, I'm so thrilled to have it again and very psyched to get it done!

I am so happy for you!!!! And it is wonderful. It probably was just waiting for you to figure out how to finish it and now is the time, apparently. Meanwhile it was keeping itself safe for you.
oh, does this sound familiar! I lost one of my favorite pieces...a small art quilt I made...about a year ago...can't for the life of me figure out where I put it...I know I put it "in a safe place" but sure don't know where it is.
Soooo happy for you to have found this! Can hardly wait to see the pix when you post them.
I've been looking at borders and bindings in all my books today to get ideas. I want a scalloped edge which I've never done before, and I'm thinking of doing a narrow piping just beside or right on the binding. I've also never done that! I think today I will put another pieced border on and then figure out where to go from there. But first, my Kona white is in the drier and I have some fabric ironing to do .

That is wonderful...a found and almost finished quilt....Scallops are easy peasy if you pillow turn and not so bad if you finish the binding by hand after you sew it on the front.Just remember...""""""never""""" trim the scallops until you have the binding sewn on one side...never ever do you hear???? Make any adjustments in the scallop in the center of each side of the quilt(ie. Top,Bottom,Left & Right side). Sometimes the math does not work out for how many and what size scallops are needed so I find it easy to adjust in the center. I also mark my corners first....Washable Marker help a TON.

Eleanor Burns has a special ruler for scallops and waves. You might find her instructional PDF helpful in your planning. http://www.quiltinaday.com/Rul.../ScallopVineWEB1.pdf eta link to Eleanor's instructions. This message has been edited. Last edited by: wildcatmom,
FANTABULOUS!!! I love scalloped borders. Think I've only done it twice though.
I lost a whole quilt one time. Searched high and low. Between the mattress and foundation on both beds. Scratched my head. Had NO idea where the quilt was. Moaned to DH a couple (okay hundreds) of times.
I found it. In the camper ON THE BED!! LOL That was soooo bad. In my defense, we had not taken the camper anywhere in a couple of years (and we spent how much on it?!). Now all quilts reside in the house. When/if we get the camper ready for a trip, I'll load up a quilt at the same time...then bring it back in when we get home.
Grishko- so glad that you found that top-can't wait to see it, now can you come to my house and find a wall mirror for me, I know that it is my upstairs and those rooms look like the ones on the hoarding shows-and I am not a hoarder even though my kids say that I am. This mirror is 12x24 so it is no small thing, guess I'll have to clean these rooms out after all.
TcMay- I am in the process of making a quilt for a daughter, have 2 borders to put on it yet and I did not know that about a scallop boarder, not to trim until the binging is on. I sure and glad that you posted that.
That's fantastic!!! Now, can you come to my house to find the twelve black and white paperpieced blocks I did back in Virginia (and saw after we moved here) so I can finish that project?
Thanks all for the advice and tutorial links. Very helpful!!
TcMay, do you mean sew the binding to the pencil lines while the border is still a straight edge, and then cut along the lines to create the scalloped edge? That would be easy enough and it's good to know ahead of time!
I have a scallop ruler/tool thingy that I was going to use, the directions were super easy, but it only has markings for 6,7,8, and 9inch scallops. That is smaller than what I had envisioned. I was thinking of fewer, larger scallops rather than lots of little ones, so I'm going to figure out the math myself (gulp!)
I am hand quilting, so in order to be able to get the sandwich into the quilt hoop frame and have it supported enough to quilt in each scallop I have come up with this plan...
Sew on a straight border that is several inches longer than I want the actual finished quilt to be. I want a 14" drape where the quilt hangs over the side of the bed, so I will make the border more like 18" wide. That should be enough extra fabric to catch in the hoop frame so I can quilt inside each scallop.
Mark the scallops and then go over the chalk mark with a machine basting stitch to both stabilize the edge and make sure that the cutting line for the scallop is clear even if the chalk is rubbed off.
Sandwich and quilt.
Sew on the binding along the basting line.
Cut the sandwich below the binding/basting line to turn the straight edge into a scalloped one.
Sew binding to back by hand.
Does this sound right? Any glaring problems I'm overlooking?
