.... today my son, 51, went to the ER with pain in his left eye and couldn't see - had been having some bad headaches too. Well, the blood vessels in his eye have popped due to High Blood Pressure. It is permanently blinded. His right eye is at risk, also. I think he will be very very careful that he takes his meds as directed.
He is scared and rightly so ... I am really sad for him. But it sure could have been worse. Like a crippling stroke.

my DH has HBP, too. He has had a serious retinal bleed that one regular eye doc said the loss of sight was probably permanent. But he went to the Cincinnati Eye Institute to a retinal specialist who did laser surgery twice (or maybe three times?) - first to "seal" off all the little spider veins that had developed around a blockage that were leaking and then to "vaporize" the residual blood floating around in the eye fluid (sorry for being so gross). Bottom line, his sight was saved. See if your son has been to or will go to a retinal specialist. A second opinion never hurts

Oh Sandy so sorry to hear of this. HBP is sooo prominent and men won't go to doctors. My DH had a mild stroke when we caught his. Fortunately the stroke didn't do any permanent damage and he was put on medication immediately. He is very good about taking the meds.

Sandy, so sorry about your son. But do get a second opinion. I know it gets depressing to take meds everyday, but the consequences of not taking them are even worse. I take a handful in the morning and another handful in the evening. HBP is nothing to mess around with. I lost my brother when he was just 49 and all his problems started with HBP that he didn't take care of.

Sandie, I'm so sorry to hear this. Sure hope he can get something done to restore his sight. Get that second, or third, or fourth opinion okay? And sooner would be much better than later, I'd suspect. My best to your son.

I personally take two bp meds and mine wasn't extrememly high, but high enough.

.... thank you for the support - and suggestions. He just might cave and go to another doc if I share your notes, he'll call this afternoon and I will READ them to him ... thanks so much. In my book 51 is still a young man!

DH, retired dentist, fought 3 different doctors for 4 years about BP meds. His blood pressure is just a little high and according to what he learned in dental school for his age it was age appropriate. Fussing with him for four years, I finally asked if there had been any changes/improvements in the dental word from the time of his beginning his dental practice until the time he retired and closed the doors... That and what the VA doctor told him about elevated BP during times of stress...he is on a very low dose of BP meds now. MOF, he has to cut the pill in half. And he fought this?!

That is plenty scary...I do hope he seeks other opinions...I take my low dose HBP everyday...but I do blame it for bringing on the Raynauds I have to deal with on a daily.

... son sent a text messg wtih pic of him wearing the eye patch... sure is hard to look at but so glad it wasn't any worse .. and yes, he has been properly 'talked to' ..

Sandie, I just saw your post about your son & am sorry to hear this. I agree w/the others that he should go to a specialist. Maybe it's not too late to save his sight. 51 is very young...my DD is 45 & DSIL just turned 50 this year & that is VERY young in my mind. My prayers are being lifted up for him that he will be guided to the right doctor.

I am reminded to go take my pill now.

I never had any problems with my BP. It was always steady at dr's appts. Six months ago, I was sitting sewing and felt a tingling up my left arm and it felt like someone was dimming the lights. I live alone, so I ran to the phone and called a nearby friend. Diagnosis, a mild TIA. Residual effect, loss of vision in both eyes upper left quadrant. I have a large blind spot. I've had a second opinion and now take daily meds. I too felt I was indestructable. My best wishes for your son. I hope his vision improves soon.

My boss is a Dr. not an M.D. but has taken the boards for his license....that's all I'm sayin for his privacy anyway.....he has never had blood pressure issues EVER. One afternoon he layed down for a nap and woke up with what he calls....wax paper vision.....like he is looking through wax paper in one eye (only one eye) yep....high blood pressure....he never suspected a thing...He was referred to a specialist and he gets a shot in his eye every month now and it is getting better but will never be the same. My husband has high blood pressure and has the cuff in our bedroom but I never take my pressure....I should have my boss show me how to take it tomorrow. I am 55 next month and I only have one good eye as it is my viewing screen is not useable in my left eye never has been. I

Sorry to hear of your sons misfortune, hoping he will get more opinions and his sight will be restored, keeping you and your family in my T's and P's...big hugs from one momma to another.

...Dont fool around with it Michelle ... my son is wearing an eye patch so the strain of trying to see doesn't hurt the other eye! Watch your BP!
