Entry #1

I started by making a wonky shaped quilt because of the wonky shaped building. My original quilt had a much smaller version of the building and I had scrappy pieced all of the background in the same fashion as the current foreground. I just couldn't move forward because I was doing a relatively true representation of the pix and I didn't want to be! I wanted to be more "original" in my interpretation. I know there are those art quilters who may do a literal interpretation and their quilts will rock it out! I am constantly striving to "be myself" in my work and rather than do something marginal in a literal interpretation I decided to leave that to the quilters out there who are really good at it!

So I cut the house from the background (it was the smaller, light colored raw silk piece that is inside what is now the entire building) and started adding scraps and left overs to the building to make it into the larger building it finally became. I machine quilted the building separate from the background to add dimension before I added the background. I decided the whole "lean" thing was bothering me. Your comment about "it looks like it is just held together by the hinges" spoke to me and I decided to change directions and wanted to honor the history and age of the building rather than just the leaning of it.

Everything on my quilt is old, repurposed, vintage (except 2 pieces of lace and 1 piece of trim which are new) and truly has the character that comes with age. I used real darning thread from my son-in-laws grandmother's darning basket to attach everything. Luckily there was brown, cream and black. For the background I decided I wanted to use a chenile bedspread that I had but it was white with flowers so I dyed it and absolutely love it and the age it represents. I stitched the building and the foreground to the now blue chenile. Keeping the wonky original theme I cut it wonky. I layered my batting and used the "tying" technique to hold the layers together. What a lovely vintagey type of technique...feels so soft and makes me think of old quilts that are tied. The knitting needles are all my mother's old and rusty pieces. I cleaned out her knitting bag this year and discovered these bits and pieces...I knew they HAD to go on this quilt to represent the boards and textures of the roof and the walls of the building. The clock face was given to me just last week by my father...had been a part of the family heirloom grandmother's clock that sat on our family mantel for 42 years. He took the clock apart and replaced old and non-working parts...I was THRILLED with the gift and knew it had to go on the quilt as well. The green "bushes" are vinatge crochet shade pulls that I bought in an antique store 29 years ago and have been holding on to for just the right project.

"The Spirit Returns".

My building is cattywhompus, as my mom used to say. I put in a ghostly old car, at least I hope it's ghostly.

As you can see the building just looks funny, maybe it's going to cave in on itself.

Awesome quilts! You can tell each entry took time and thought and a lot of stitching! Fun to see what everyone does with the same inspiration. Thank you, Q, for another great challenge.

I like them all...each very detailed and unique. Do we know who the 4 are that completed the challenge or will that be revealed later? Just curious.

**The challenge and end results are wonderful. Even with four, it's difficult to sort and choose. Certainly shows creativity and super workmanship. If any participants are going to COF, it would be fun to see the actual quilts.
