have any of you made totems out of the plastic vases, plates, etc? or would the heat outside be too harsh on them, as it has topped 100 degrees here in the southern part of GA during the hottest part of summer.

you could always give it a try; someone has to be first. i just don't know if it would have the sparkle that glass has.

It might work if you put them in the shade, but I don't think they would hold up as long, and you would probably need to do something to weigh them down. I've seen some plastic bowls made to look like cut glass. Not as sparkly as glass, but pretty.

What about putting colored water in the vases or putting clear or colored plastic wrap in the vases. This would catch the sunlight and sparkle.

I just made one with plastic and glass. I can't post because I had to send my sons camera to him. But, my daughter and I just bought one on ebay and is just waiting for it in the mail. Then I will post it. Smile

I've thought of making a plastic one too. I save all the flower vases from our church from funeral flowers. Right now I have some quite large plastic urns and various shapes of plastic pots that I'm thinking of putting together. Since they're mostly gray or green I thought I'd spray paint them with some of that faux stone paint.

It's on my to-do list. I'll add a pic when I get it done.

You have to remember if you use plastic outside you would have to take them in at the end of summer.Plastic tends to get brittle and break when weathered.Ask my DH cause he just fell off a plastic brittle bucket last week.Heeling now but I still hvae to say "howdumb" to him every now and then.

Big Grin LOL So funny! Not the accident but this sounds like what I'd do with DH except after 42 years I wouldn't have to say anything, just look at him with a small smile!

I think one could fill the bottom plastic "thingie" with sand to weight it. I don't think I'd make a totem out of plastic as I'm fairly sure most plastics degrade in sunlight over time. I love the sparkle that glass gives altho I'd like to do one out of pottery as one poster did. Her lovely creation is on the first Shutterfly T2T album and I don't know why I can't remember who did it but it's really a nice totem.

I've only had one glass totem chip and it was the kind on a copper stake and I think DH may have accidentally hit it with something. If the glass ones are made with a good base - I like the glass microwave turntables, then a good heavy big vase - they are very stable.
