Hi, I am living in a small single room. The furniture is provided by the landlady which are very different. I am not being ungrateful but I want to make my room bit more cozy than before. It has a single bed(with a big mismatched headboard), Two big tables n two chairs n then one small thin table. and an iron cupboard. So any ideas how I can make my room better looking.
I would ask if you could paint. I'd paint all the furniture white...or all the same color to unify. Buy a cute comfoter and some wall art. IKEA is our friend when you are on a budget. IKEA.com
Matchy, matchy is out. Approach the mismatched furniture as a decorating challenge. The idea is to unite everything with color.
The largest item in the room is the bed. The comforter can serve as your color palette and inspiration. A sheet in a solid color inspired by the comforter can cover one of the tables. A pillow in the same or different color can be tossed into one of the chairs. A rug is another way to introduce color. If the headboard of the bed is huge, perhaps there is room to attach a small colorful wreath. Acessories and accent color(s) should coordinate as well.
The table used for dining can be topped with a colorful table cloth or placemats and a bowl of fruit or vase of flowers. The tiny thin table might serve as a nightstand if tall enough. If not and there is room, move the other large table to the side of the bed. Then, the tiny table can be placed by the door with a basket on it to catch your keys when you enter, or it can serve as a plant stand. Perhaps you have a sunny window and can nurse a fern or spider plant.
Inexpensive sheer curtains can be picked up at the Dollar Store or discount store. Flea markets and yard sales are a good place to look for bargains. Look for pictures that have your color(s) in them. Pictures are a way to get color on the walls. If you are artsy, you can pick up a stretched canvas and some paints and brush at a local art supply store and splatter or splash some of your colors onto the canvas, creating your own contemporary art. The idea is color. It's likely the work will never make it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
If carpet or other floor covering is some hideous color, you can ignore it. Or look for an area rug that has your colors in it. Sometimes you can find one at the flea market. Some get creative and paint their own oil cloth.
Most landlords frown upon renters painting. This is because many use nonneutral colors on walls, they get paint on the hardware and other places paint should not be. Paint is a great way to tie mismatched furniture together. You see this a lot in shabby chic and cottage decor.
You don't mention a dresser or chest of drawers. I assume that you are storing all your clothing in a closet. Don't forget that you can take advantage of underbed storage. Cardboard boxes are free and can be cut down to make trays to hold socks, undies, etc. A row up and down each side of the bed will provide lots of storage. Of course, if you have lots of time on your hands, you can always paint and decorate them. But, no one will likely see them because they are under the bed. Baskets are decorative and can be used for storage. If you purchase anything, make sure it has the capabilty of storage.
As indicated, the matchy matchy is out. It has been for many for years. You inherit Aunt Bee's china cabinet, Grandma's couch, a friend gives you an old diningroom table, etc. You don't mention the color or wood species of the pieces of furniture or their style. That makes no difference. The key is unity through color.
There is nothing more boring than visiting a home where it looks like they spent too much time in furniture showroom. The diningroom suite, the livingroom suite, the bedroom suite, etc. No imagination. No freedom.
When folks ask you what your decorating style is, you can honestly say 'eclectic.' I used to tell folks that mine was early attic.
One more thing, you can type into your search engine 'decorating with mismatched furniture' and find lots of links. There is a wealth of info on the internet about color, decorating with color, the color wheel. Furniture arrangement, storage and organization, and everything else under the sun. The library is a source of lots of magazines and books on decorating. Who knows? You may look back on this time and chuckle after you have become an interior designer or decorator. Hey, we all have to start somewhere. And, that's usually when we're living out of bookbags.
Post back. Your post was great. Keep us abreast of your progress.
