DH needed a project and I needed seating around our firepit so he made this from his scrap wood. He has enough to make two more the same size. He's going to stain them brown with leftover stain from another project.
I've already told him that after we move we may not have a firepit so I'll just wash them and slap some white paint on them for in the house! I got that look again!

Very nice work, joyluck. I love making benches and rescuing old benches that have been neglected and abandoned, so I've seen and made a lot of different styles.
But this one's unique, in my experience. Beautiful work and a simple, perfectly useful design. I've saved your photo and I'll be copying some of your husband's choices.

Gail, here's a pic of the underside so you can see how simple the construction is. The style of this bench (and the other 2 to follow) were planned to use up some old scrap 2x4's he had. So the style had to conform to the materials available. It seems strong and is pretty heavy, being made mostly of 2x4's. It's 32" long. DH wanted to make them longer but I knew they'd be too heavy for me to carry. These are long enough for the G'kids or even DH and I to sit side by side!

What a great bench! It reminds me of the old shaker style benches. Thanks for sharing the construction pictures. I saw some pallets today...don't know if I'll be able to 'snatch'em' but I really need to make some outside simple benches and tables. This design would be perfect!
I confess!!!... I have stolen the pictures to show DH and hope like mad that he'll make a couple for me, too!!... neat design!.. looks sturdy and no-wobble-y!!.... I'm seeing one in the house, and one in the garden holding plants and...... thank you!!!
That's great Joy Luck! These benches are so handy! and he did a nice job. I've been looking through old family photos and the bench on my porch is featured in a lot of them holding people taken generations apart.

I hope that you don't care that I printed out the pictures of your wonderful bench. My husband needs something to do until the ground drys out so he can get in the fields to plant corn/soybeans( he is getting very antzy) and this looks like the PERFECT item for him to make.
Thanks for the nice comments and I don't mind at all if people save pics for inspiration.
Here's a pic of the three finished benches with some brown oil stain on them. I just stacked them for the pic. We're using them on the deck and patio for side tables right now altho they'll be out by the firepit when those "city" people visit who love an outdoor fire.
