Hello to all. My husband and I moved into our new home about a year ago. We are planning to start a downstairs family room soon. I love the distressed look and have tried very hard to make our new home look old. Since the basement area does not have any windows, I would like to use a couple of old paned windows to give the effect of being above ground. I know I've seen this done on HGTV before, but don't know on which show. I'd like to put lights behind them (possibly frosting the glass) so it looks like it is sunny outside. Any suggestions on how to accomplish this task? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks you so much!

I cant help you with those kinds of windows but here is what I did with some molding to make a window where I couldnt have one. it really lightens the room as well as reflects and adds visual space..

I would think that you would need to build a shadow-box-like frame so you could have lights behind the window. You could put an outdoors-scene photographic mural on the wall behind the frame. Maybe you could use some of those small halogen lights in the top of the shadow-box frame with some kind of daylight-looking bulbs?

I saw an episode of Decorating Cents where they were adding fake windows to a basement family room. They cut a hole in the wall between the family room and a laundry room, when the laundry room light was on the light shone through. They didn't use a window though, they used shutters. Hope this helps! Sara

Hi Sara.. I used the boxes of glass from Lo*wes. 6.00 for 10 pieces I believe. I wrote all the how to instructions in the general decorating section. you should be able to go there and type in search and it'll pop right up for you. OR clck on my name and choose all posts by: then look for Inspiration or Focal point post.. I have to get to work or I;d go find it for you. if you cant find it, let me know and I'll send it when I get home this afternoon.
