I bought 2 of those Closetmaid organizers- fake wood- stackable pieces & they are "cherry"- ugh. They need to be a black-brown to match the rest of my room. I'm thinking about using Modge podge & paper bags to cover them & then paint them. I don't think that just paint will stick to the finish. What do you think? Will it be a dusting nightmare? Give me some ideas, please.

Jean, if they have a shiny finish it will be more difficult to do a good paint finish. However if they have that dull woodgrain they can be painted. DH did ours with a good basecoat then latex paint. They could not be sanded because of the finish. They have been good for a couple of years now altho don't get hard use.

About dust and black furniture - buy swiffers by the big box! I have several black painted pieces and dust shows a lot even tho we are not in a dusty area. Every day or two it's necessary. I still like the look of black so will just dance around my house with the swiffer!

ETA - if you do the brown bag technique and scrunch the paper so there's some texture you could use black plus another color for highlighting (antiquing) and the dust then won't show much. I might have to do that myself, sounds like fun!

I think I'm going to try the bags. Joyluck, I agree with the scrunching-I always tear & scrunch-I like the aged look that it gives. At least they were inexpensive, if I mess them up. Have more invested in the time that it took to put them together...
