I made this the other day using a 50 cent shade from a yard sale, old electric cord, light fixture (don't know where I got it or why I had it -- but glad I found it), and slats from an old bi-fold door.

This hangs near my small tv so I see it all the time and am satisfied with it -- almost. I am "thinking" about painting a brown band on the top and bottom edges to emulate the sample on the inspiration lamp. What do you think?

Also, the shade does not let a lot of light through -- most of the light comes out the top and bottom. If I do it again I will try to find a shade with more transparency.

The first pic is the inspiration from a big box store.

I actually like yours better than the store px. Probably because your slats are closer together (and richer looking) but that is also why your light comes out the top and bottom.

I would not add anything to it. Just my opinion.

My Life,

That is a great lamp using parts and pieces. I love the color and that you put the slats closer too.

Wonder if old slatted blind slats could be cut down to size and used to make a lamp. Paint sticks from the paint store perhaps?

Thanks for sharing your project. You have some of the best frugal ideas.

Now, that's a brilliant idea, BR! All the blinds for my windows (white, wood look 2") are at least 10 slats too long. What about a black shade or any other color with the white slats?

Thanks for your kind words. I think paint sticks would work great since they have the curved handle tops. So would the blinds.

Here's a shelf I made over using the same slats. The shelf was a quarter at a yard sale and had a short back. I added a larger back to it and "tiled" the top with slats painted white and then I painted the bottom slats with craft paints and covered them with a silver glaze I got at a yard sale in FL for $1.00.

And, I still have a ton of slats to use -- somewhere, somehow.

I love the slats on the shelf esp the way you painted them. that is adorable and the lamp is also very nice. I wouldn't paint the bands as on the inspiration pic they look like they are rigid and under the slat things.

My Life,

What about a star burst mirror made with the slats/paint-sticks? Easy to cut and taper the ends.

Something similar to this one perhaps?

Love your shelf re-do too!
