    Hi everyone,
I've been lurking for a month or so. I've been junking for years. Finally I find people who are crazy about like myself. After reading all these posts I have a list a mile long of things to do. The chest of drawers I'm refinishing will be done tomorrow. Then maybe I can start the dresser, nah maybe the mirror next, nah I'm excited to get to the headboard made out of a door. Oh heck who am I kidding, These totems are too cute and what a great idea for all my garage sale glass I've been collecting. Then the benches, I have an old crib hmmmmm maybe thats next. Oh man I forget that cute wooden chair I found today, maybe thats it. As you can tell I have many things on my list and this site is making my list longer. I love all the great ideas.
I do need some help though. My daughter and I were coming home last week and I spotted a bentwood rocking chair in the trash. My teen daughter pulled up the hood on her hoodie, grabbed some sunglasses, jumped out of the truck and snagged it. No way was anyone going to recognize her. I had to hi five her. It was her first time. So now my problem. This rocker is perfect except the caning on the seat has imploded. It looks like it a single piece and is glued on some how. Does anyone know if you can buy the caning anyplace. It's more of a plastic faux cane if you know what I mean. I have another one that I bought a few years ago. It's not real sturdy (no one is allowed to sit in it till I fix it) so I could have an actually set if I could figure out a way to fiz it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. And no I don't want to paint it white Wink. Thanks so much in advance and I can't wait to be a part of this group as more then a lurker.

    Try your local craft stores.

Also search plastic caning on your computer and there are a few places that sell it.

Hi, clforest, and welcome to the forum! Smile

I am sure hoping you have a camera cause you will have a lot of projects to show us! Wink Big Grin

Just don't be like me and procrastinate cause there are so many choices in how to refinish things. Right now I'm waffling on what color to paint an old chest. My DH has primed it and said if he doesn't hear otherwise soon he's going with yellow when he's ready to paint it! Big Grin

This is a great forum for ideas, inspiration and support. Looking forward to seeing what you do with your stuff.

I don't know anything about caning, maybe Michaels has it? I know I've seen chair seats woven with ties, belts, and strips of cloth in unique T2T style.

You could also just cut a seat from wood and pad and cover with fabric for another look attach from underside with short screws. Just an idea incase you can't find what your looking for.

Welcome to this wonderful group of people that share the same love of "old crap". There is one problem, I have re-ignited my old traits of OCD. I jump from one project to the next without completing as I have to keep checking out the message boards. After a while, I get harrassed about photos of finished projects. I think I need a 12 step program to take me from start to finishing a project. This is a great place for ideas and compassion. It is a warm and comforting group. About your chair...I agree with using a piece of plywood and covering it. It would be different than just the old chair.

Thanks for the warm welcome and the great ideas. I had to bookmark that site for Van Dykes. The chair is in excellent shape but it was picked up from the side of the road. I kind of hate to spend a lot of money on repairs for it. I'm thinking I just might try and cover the seat. Heck I have 2 of them could make them match and have a set. I'm thinking they would look great on my future deck. Did I mention we are in the middle of a huge remodel and addition. Oh yeah we have crap everywhere, yard work to be done, inside of house to paint, carpets that need cleaning, a daughter graduating this year, which means an open house, a son getting married too. Oh yeah and I'm going on vacation in 11 days to Mexico lol. So why am I spending all my time getting great ideas, and starting all these projects? It's a disease I have I think. I went to the Restore yeasterday found an awesome wooden kitchen chair for 2$, 2 shutters for my future gardening shed,a cool print (looks like a map) of the west Indies (just need to make a frame) and some bellows for my husband (he likes to smoke meat and needed those for the fire. I keep jumping from one thing to the next. At least the chest of drawers will be done today. I'm at the its good enough stage. I don't have any before pictures but the finish is great. I stripped off a million layers of paint, found broken veneer had to add wood trim from HD to jazz it up, and stained it with a mahogny stain. It looks like an antique now even though it was just a old pine dresser. As you can read I'm in to overkill. Sigh, I'm exhausted just from rereading this. Once again just wanted to thank everyone.
