You may want to try watching My First Place for low to middle incomes and of course there is the ever present House Hunters, just last night at 10PM the house buyer was looking for a house under $100,000 in Las Vegas and there were several to chose from.

I mean, really, what did you expect when you saw the title 'Selling New York'? The average house price in Manhattan is over 1.4 million according to this article by CNN. And it's even higher in areas like TriBeCa and SoHo. So really, what they are showing is what the 'average' Manhattanite can buy.

As I said before, zygote, change the channel!!!

I was a realtor, nowhere close to this price range, but it fascinates me how realtors market these multi-million dollar listings and how they get the deal done!!!

A home stager friend of mine appeared on the show a while back and that's how I started watching. I was instantly hooked!

I agree that there are LOTS of shows on HGTV for people interested in house hunters looking for first time or modest properties.

Selling NY is about the only one that shows tasteful (IMHO) expensive properties, except for the occasional HH or HHI episode. The $100,000 or $1,000,000 room makeover shows usually show just bigger and more expensive versions of bad or mundane taste so they are not fun (for me) to watch. I just don't watch them, but why not let others who like these shows do it? The remote is my friend.

It should be easy for anyone who finds shows about expensive properties boring or offensive to avoid them.

:-) Actually on a lot of the episodes, they don't make a sale! I believe it's all about price most of the time. If the broker does a good job of researching comparables (and for some of the houses, I realize that may be hard to find) and the owner sets the price at a market rate, they probably move just as quickly as with the expensive parties.

Being a native New Yorker, I LOVE THIS SHOW!! I enjoy seeing the different properties, and the marketing techniques are interesting.

I love this show too - and, because I'm a Santa Monica/Malibu area native, I also love Selling L.A.
The OP has blasted all the show threads complaining about not seeing "regular" type homes. She is obviously so unhappy with her own economic status she thinks anyone who can afford anything nice should be drawn and quartered. Hopefully now that she's vented she'll either change the channel to Swamp Hog Decorating or find a way to get some enjoyment out of what little design programming HGTV has.

I LOVE selling New York. The agents are characters and the properties are really interesting.

@zygote you are entitled to your opinion, but I think the *point* of Selling NY (and Selling LA and Selling London) is the fantasy of it. Most people can't afford homes that high end, but that doesn't mean we don't want to take a look inside!

Me, I love these shows. Glad to see they added London to the mix!

i find this show fascinating and it gives me a chance to dream of what could be on the day i win the lottery!!! yes, it is unrealistic for most but it is also complete fantasy and a star to wish on!!
has a few interesting design ideas too!!

I agree with the OP. HGTV is turning into a real estate/reality network now. Most programming is not made to be realistic with most Americans. Not many people in the US think that a $500,000 house is on the cheap side and will be too small for one couple with no children. Maybe if they created another network that is only for real estate shows, then maybe they would increase the viewership.

YES I HATE THESE TYPE OF SHOWS . and for the stupid person that thinks I just sit around watching that stupid show I do change the channel. I see you don't have any common sense, if you believe I sit around watching those shows, I"m upset that those type of show are taking up time when they could be showing someelse worth watching. But if your that stupid to think I sit around watching it, Oh Well! I do have a remote and I know how to use it. {smile} and I do use it.

I have to agree with you, I hate this show also, The people on this show are somewhat
snotty (if you know what that means)
Also, I don't like the show that is about
selling homes in California, where the three

For those interested in the life styles of the "rich and picky," you may have some trouble finding the new episodes of Selling NY. They are being shown 5:30 Central time here, not a great time for lots of people.
