On some of my perennials, not any one type, I have noiced that some of the leaves are odd shaped and curled mostly at the ends. I don't see any critters (bugs) and even inspected the undersides - don't see anything either. Our weather has been rather extreme from cool to really hot, could that be the problem or do you think it's a pest of some sort?

Hi,
I'm a relatively new gardener, so hopefully someone with more experience will come along shortly. BUT.....if it is only one or two stems per plant, and does not affect the whole plant, I think it is some kind of bug, and not the weather. I am learning there are lots of tiny things that lay eggs or bore inside the stems and you can't see them. The other thing I thought of was frost damage. Are these plants that come up early in spring and could've gotten a little frost-bit? Some of my first hosta leaves to appear last season were weak and wrinkly looking. But the later ones were all fine. And this season they are all fine too.

Since the damage is mostly an aesthetic one, curled leaves appearing at the tips on many types of plants with no outward sign of a pest eating the leaves, one might begin to think its in the soil.

If this were a potted plant one might also think its due to cold drafts and the plant being allowed to dry down too much between waterings.
Excessively high temperatures do cause such damage as described.
Whenever you see a curled leaf, its usually a sign of a pest which might be revealed by opening the folded leaf.
Some leaves also will curl --usually upward--when attempting to conserve moisture.

Curled, oddly shaped, leaves can be caused by the weather as well as nutrient deficiencies, which can also be caused by the weather.
How much can weather affect plants? My Catalpa, Hackberry, adn Black Walnut trees still are not fully leafed out die to the cooler than average spring we have had. Some plants do have curled, oddly shaped, leaves, due to the cooler than average spring weather we have had.
Yes some leaves may curl in an effort to conserve moisture, if the weather is really hot, like over the mid 80's for several hours. But that may not always be upward and wilting is also an indication of heat stress, your plant cannot move enough moisture up from the roots to the leaves to keep them cool and functioning.

The sign of a good gardener is not a green thumb, it is brown knees.

Thanks everyone. Is there anything I should do?

Pretty much the first steps are to identify the particular plant, and then the problem the plant has.

Posters have given some guesses as to what can generally cause problems, so you would want to narrow down the causes and then maybe ask for more specfic help.
