I have been a little under the weather the past couple of days and I have been lightly watering my plants after dark. To my surprise when I came home from work today, I noticed that my butterfly weed plant has no leaves and no flowers on it at all. I don't I looked at it in the daylight in over a week, but I was quite surprised. All the stocks are green, but no leaves or flowers. Now, the past week the temp has dropped from the high 80's to the mid 70's so I am not sure if this did something or not. This is my first year growing this plant, so I am not sure if this normal at fall or not. Thanks for any input.

Sounds like too much water. It's best to stick you fingers down into the soil a few inches to see if it needs to be watered. Most plants do not like their roots to stand in water.

OR it sounds like a monarch laid eggs on your plant and the caterpillars hatched and ate all the leaves - just like they're supposed to!

Dr, the asclepias tuberosa stands up well to dry conditions so I don't think your being away was a problem.
Perhaps just a wind came along and blew off the leaves and blooms that may have just not matured enough since it is first year plant.
Give it another year or two and the butterfly weed will perform better.

Thanks for the input guys. I think it was either the butterflies or the wind since I have been kind of delenquit on waterings the last week. I guess I was spoiled because I planted the plant in april and it had bloomed consistantly until last week. We did have a windy day as one of the tropical storms blew threw and I did notice the plant has 2 stems with leaves and 6 bare stems. So it could have been the caterpillars as well. I just didn't know if the plant lost it's leaves before a frost. I really like this plant and I am glad that I planted it this year.
