Hi,

We just purchased a house where we are going to have to do an addition and bump out the back of the house to create a larger kitchen. I'm trying to decide whether it's better to have a separate cooktop and oven (or perhaps two ovens) or a regular, somewhat high-end stove/oven combo. Any recommendations? Thanks!

I'd suggest two separate pieces. Aside from 'look' ... you can find a cooktop that meets your needs ... and an oven that meets your needs. One can be placed atop of the other (if designed as such by the Mfg), offering a continuous counter edge detail.

Just my $0.02.

In my recent kitchen remodel I changed from separate pieces to a GE electric double oven range. I am happy with my choice.

I wonder how it ever got started to have the oven and cooktop separate? Maybe for those who wanted an oven more at eye level.

While I like the convenience of oven at eye level I really do not like the "look". It is all a matter of personal taste.

When we re-did our kitchen, we also considered the range option or the cooktop & oven option for our "penninsula" cooking area. Its the old "best-generalist -vs- best-of-breed" question. We ended up going with the latter.

Why? ...the look / style.

We got a cooktop, oven and hood that looked good together. We were not as pleased (and that's putting it mildly) when we tried to coordinate island hoods with ranges that met the cook's requirements (= demands).

Also, a number of ranges simply did not meet the cook's requirements for both oven and for cooktop.

The oven under a cooktop is lower than a wall oven. This will affect your back, espeically when lifting heavy items. If you have a double wall oven, the bottom of the top oven should be even with the countertop to enable the lower oven to be easily accesible.
