I'm sure I want a french door refrigerator. Our opening is limited, but I'm finally seeing some 33" wide styles available. But my next consideration is whether to get the ice/water dispenser in the door. We've been used to that feature in our side-by-side and I think I would miss it. However, an appliance salesman recently questioned how that feature is going to hold up, since it's relatively new in french door styles. He questioned the wisdom of putting an ice dispenser in the door on the frig area, not in the freezer area. Might be more repair-prone. I never thought of that. (I was looking at a Kenmore that is available in 33" width.) I saw another brand that has only water in the door and you have to get the cubes inside the bottom freezer. I could live with that I guess. But that model was too large for my space. What are your thoughts/experiences? What model would work for me, space-wise? Or is it best to skip the ice maker/water dispenser on the door altogether?
I am getting this one. I love the wide deli tray under the fruit bins great for large platters. Lowes sells them. I need the ice and water dispenser we use lots of ice. I have heard that the LG has had terrible problems with the ice/water door dispenser maybe that is why the sales man is talking you out of it. At Lowes they have a fantastic extend warranty just 150.00 for 5 years also comes with a 250.00 food reimbursement if frigde goes out and your food spoils.
I recently ordered a french door refrigerator and I opted for NO dispenser onthe door. We have had so many problems with the dispensers --and combined with hardwood floors and the spill factor -- I decided to go with the clean look. One less thing to break -- but then I was never a fan of the door dispenseer.

I questioned that too. Getting ice into, and from, the top refrigerator section, is certainly more complicated. Plus, if one opens that top door, is seems like an awful lot of refrigerator space is lost.
However, I think all french door refrigerators that don't have the ice in the door, do have a cold (filtered?) water spout on the inside. At least to me, is a reasonable compromise.

We have a Jenn Air French door refrigerator that is counter depth. The water dispenser is inside. We wanted it that way. We looked at the in-door dispensers and they just take up way too much room especially in the counter depth models. I have heard of so many problems with the dispensers in the door so - ours is inside and it's not inconvenient, either.
I also have the Jenn-Air French door with the water dispenser inside and it has worked great for us. Of course, since we opted to have our fridge paneled to match our cabinets, ice & water in the door was not an option. Anyone with hardwood floors can tell you what a pain those outside the door dispensers are, especially with kids.
We have the Samsung FD with the ice and water dispenser in the model (last year's model). We looked into the problems of in-the-door dispensers on FD before we bought. We discovered that last year's models introduced by both Samsung and LG (the behind the scene manufacturers for a number of the major brands: GE, Amana, Whirlpool, etc.) were redesigned to correct the issues customers & repairmen reported/fixed. Initial reports seem to confirm that the various problems are no longer happening. And, the repairman we consulted felt they are just as unproblematic as side-by-sides now.
We bought our Kenmore french door fridge w/ice and water dispenser in the door about 2 1/2 mos. ago. Unfortunately, that's not long enough to tell you how it holds up. I will tell you that I love the fridge, esp. the fact that I don't have to open the door and let the cold air out every time I want a glass of cold, filtered water (which is often). Our dispenser is not tall enough for a regular tall glass, so I just remove the tray below while I fill the glass and then replace the tray. It's not a big deal. Had we found one that had a water dispenser only on the outside, we would probably have preferred it because we rarely use ice. All in all, though, we are very happy with it.

We have a side-by-side now so we too have gotten used to the ease of water/ice on the door. My french door is being delivered tomorrow and I opted for water inside. Even with getting a 36" wide frig I felt I was losing much too much space on the door. I have always felt that I sacrifed width in the frig with the side-by-side and didn't want to make another mistake with this choice. Here's what I chose. Whirlpool Gold
