I have a black ge double oven I received which was only 3 years old. I want stainless appliances, but want to be able to use a freebie to cut costs. Also looking at cooktops, black looks like it doesn't show the dirt as much as stainless would...Thoughts please?

Black and stainless should go fine together.

Actually we have a newer "stainless steel" electric range...so even if the door/trim/control panel is stainless, it has a black glass cook top and the oven window appears black too.

Stainless steel microwave is the same, the window appears black. (Many of the common SS refrigerators have black sides/top for trim also)

All S/S is not created equal. Some is easier to keep clean than others. I have a black stove that shows everything and I hate it.

Since you have the black ovens already free, that's a powerful incentive to go with black. Are you going to stay in the house for years and years or is this short term? How about using the black oven now, and if you are putting in other new appliances go with GOOD S/S. After a few years you can make a switch to S/S ovens. I don't think black and S/S look bad together in the same kitchen. My clients usually ask for S/S but in your case I think I'd use the freebie. This will also give you a chance to decide which you like best and make a change down the road if you still want to.

Black cooktops are a nightmare! My SS duel fuel range has black drip pans and every speck of salt, not to mention grease drips, shows. Many SS ranges and cooktops have black burners, drip pans, control panels or some other part that is black so shop for one of those to tie the black oven to the stainless.
