Dark kitchen, what color to paint? Sign In/Join
posted
Hello,

So, my lovely boyfriend wouldn't listen to me when I told him that the backsplash will be too dark for the kitchen. We now have a dark, dark kitchen. I am having a real hard time picking a color to paint it. I feel like it needs color but then I feel that it needs a tannish color? Does any one have any suggestions?
Thank you!

I think it is your cabinets that make it so dark. Anyway, I would pick a pastel of some hue. The white hue will reflect the light better. Also use at least an eggshell finish, if not a semi-gloss to reflect the light.

Just my opinion.

I would get some good under cabinet lighting to illuminate the backsplash which should help some...good ceiling light also will help. if you don't have your cabinet handles/pulls yet I would consider them in polished stainless with some size and weight to them to add some sparkle.

As for wall colour..if you haven"t done this already... factor in the colours of adjoining rooms ,kitchen floor colour etc and your preference for warm or cool colours then start considering colours.

If you pick a fairly neutral wall colour you can accessorize with bright colours such as granny apple green or aqua as an example...
or find a fabric you really like for a roman blind for the window and pull a colour from it for accessorizing...I think once you get everything finished and pulled together it will look very nice...I personally love how dark cabinetry with under cabinet lighting and bright accessories looks... especially at nite
