I just dont know what to do with this kitchen. The cabinets are solid wood and very sturdy so I would like to keep them. I just dont know what I can do to make it look less rustic country and make it a little more modern. Any suggestions?

I am sure someone will tell you to paint them but you can make a big difference if you 1)change the hinges, 2) get rid of the plaid valance 3) remove the scallop edging around the window.

I'd do that first and see what you think. That should remove most of the 'rustic' part. If you still want to do more you can use a narrow strip of glaze just inside the outer raised panels.

After you've lived with that and you still need more.... well, then it might be time to paint.

My own kitchen was similar--even the walls. I painted everything.

The colors are true in the picture above, but not so true in this one, but it may give you ideas about what can be done with a country look.

I agree with metwo...change the hardware, including the hinges and get rid of the valance & scalloped stuff for sure.
