So I'm trying to design/pull together a wetbar for our sunroom. I've already made the connections for the plumbing(sweet!
Design issues: Question #1: What color cabinets? I think I'd like to coordinate everything within the room with the "portable" bar which is a medium/honey lacquered wood (currently). And it has a heavy/green marble inlaid top. White, taupe and BM's "Hamilton Blue" have also been suggested if we paint it. Since the latter 2 colors would mean custom color cabinet(undercounter fridge & sink), I don't think we should spend so much on this small job. Since the floor of the sunroom matches the deep blue area rug of the visibly there adjoining room (via glass patio doors), and since the wall behind the bar in the sunroom is currently likely going to be the same as the family room (Valspar "Mackinac Blue"), I could see white or white and honey/medium brown cabinets. But... Question #2: What about matching/coordinatiung with the style of the portable bar? It is a series of narrow raised pannels, not unlike the front door of the house (which will be painted Hamilton Blue). Is it better to echo or simply not clash with the portable bar using a flat front on the cabinets? And how do you keep from being guady or clashing? What would be something "too modern" for this portable bar? Finally, Question #3: Sources? With only a sink cabinet, some narrow shelves (open or in wall cabinet), maybe a small work area, we are looking at too little for anything other than self-assembly or ready-made, aren't we? The fact that this is a small job also means countertop materials other than laminate/"formica" doesn't meet "minimum buy" requirements (typically $1400 to $2200) SO it looks like formica is it. I wonder how it and the cabinets will hold up in a sunroom (i.e., a less environmentally controlled room). |

It might be difficult to get a cabinet finish to match your portable bar (color and gloss level)...so I would go with a painted finish. Maybe an exterior paint if you are worried about sun fading.
As for the countertop...if it is small you could consider marble or granite tiles for the top (if you don't want formica). If you can find large ones you wouldn't have many grout lines. I personally like a mix of materials rather than everything being too matchy. As long as you use good quality and workmanship everything will look like it belongs there. |
