Ok -- I am new here and have been asking a LOT of questions so I apologize. But one thing I am clueless about is switchplates. What would be a nice, traditional look to go with cream cabinets glazed brown, honey oak floors, stainless appliances, antique silver patina hardware and Duron Tobacco Road walls?? The backsplash is creamy grey/.blue/green.

Do I go with a hammered silver, a plain stainless, an antiqued silver to match the hardware, or a cream to go with the cabinets?? Help!

Well, my cabients are cream and my walls are Tobacco Road but my appliances are stainless and fixtures are antique silver. I was wondering about using hammered pewter switchplates? Would that look weird?

Buy several finishes - bring them home and try them out. Just open the packages carefully, keep all the hardware, take back the ones you don't like.

I am obsessed by swithplates...if you are going with inexpensive switchplates, i would choose a color that blends in to its background so it isn't noticed. Otherwise I would choose lovely plates that do match an element of your kitchen you love...whether that be the stainless of the appliances or the color of the paint on the mouldings. Awhile ago, I bookmarked a great selection of switchplates I found. Here is the link: http://www.remodelista.com/2008/08/14/10-easy-pieces-switch-plate-covers/. You can always try one or two different plates before you decide. Have fun.

I am the "odd man out" here. I can never figute out how switch plates came to be decorator items.

To me they shoud be something that you sort of "forget to see". Your eye wanders right over them without stopping ...rather than them saying "Hey, look! I am a switchplate! Am I not lovely?"

just goofing around, lol. That's just my opinion. I know we all like different things...there is no right or wrong.
