My husband and I may do an addition and stay in our current house, or put it on the market and look for something else. Either way, our kitchen needs some sprucing up. I would like to paint a color that would work whether we stay or go. I have white cabinets and appliances and was thinking of a nice gray/blue. Is that considered neutral to a prospective buyer? I really don't want to paint, tan, taupe or beige which seem to be the only colors on shows like "Designed to Sell". I was also thinking of adding a tile backsplash under the cabinets and was thinking of a dark blue for contrast with the white cabinets and medium gray with tiny blue speck countertops, or just using a gray/blue tile in a little different color than the paint color. I feel completely indecisive. Any comments or advice would be much appreciated.
A neutral is a color that can be joined with just about any other color and not appear to clash (that is not quite the right word but cannot think of a better one right now). Blue is not a neutral. Gray is. Using blue on a not-easily-replaceable surface like a backsplash is probably not the best idea if you might sell. If you like blue use it where it is easily changed, like the wall paint.

I think a creamy grey blue can be very neutral. I am using it on my travertine subway backsplash and it really goes nicely with warm earth colors. You can pick out the blue as an accent -- but you can also downplay it by highlighting the other colors. The only other true "blue" I will have in my kitchen is some bluish/gray flecks in the granite countertop.
If you don't like beige and taupe -- don't use it. Most people find that boring, anyway.
Thanks for the input. And I agree, but I feel the all white cabinets and appliances need something else to make them stand out. Painting more gray than blue is a good idea.
