Not to my tastes but if it's what you like, go for it.

klink, I agree that it's beautiful. I chose quartz over granite, but it is very apparent that you have a vendetta against granite. Are you being paid by the anti-granite lobby?

Big Grin Maybe 1/3 by the anti-granite people, 1/3 by the anti-hardwood people and the other 1/3 by the anti-stainless steel people.

That is all very harsh and uncalled for. Just because someone does not like the current trends does not mean that they are being paid by someone to say so. Bah!!!

metwo, if you had been paying close attention, you'd see that klink is always posting on every forum and thread that granite, hardwood, and stainless and open concept living areas are on the way out. Klink is a broken record. You may think we are harsh, but I think it is fair to call her out on this matter. Whenever she recommends anything, she takes the opportunity to bash at least one of these pet peeves of hers. It is natural to prefer the options you yourself have chosen, but does that mean the whole world has to agree with you? That's what makes me wonder what klink's real agenda is. Now I'm wondering if she isn't a Lavastone dealer who has been leading us up to this...

Good grief, she has been posting for 3 years and not every post has to do with that. Did you ever stop to think that she may just be wondering what your agenda is for bashing her everytime she posts about an alternative.

I still say it is harsh and over the top to accuse her of being a shill.

This is the first time I have bashed her. I actually like the idea of alternatives to granite. I am one of those who finds it too busy. I also do not like open-concept living areas. But she manages to suggest that anyone who spends money on granite, hardwood floors, knocking down walls, or stainless steel appliances has poured money down an out-of-date design rathole--with no data to support her statements. It is possible to like something without insulting everyone else who has chosen something else, isn't it?

Back to the topic:

Found this:

http://www.graniteland.com/stone/lavastone

I ran across this material years ago, actually. The "Lavastone" described as the "new granite" is such a material with a glaze fired over it, such as described here:
http://www.catherinelagot.com/theStone.html

The idea of glazed natural stone is interesting. I think it probably looks fabulous in person.

I'd be interested in knowing the Mohs hardness of the glaze before recommending it, however. If the glaze can be scratched as easily as most common glazed tile, I'd NOT recommend it for kitchen tops.

Another consideration is the glaze porosity.

Technical note: Granite is tougher than lava because it cooled slowly under great pressure. Lava stones are glassy and brittle. Basalt is volcanic rock that cooled closer to the surface, but still cooled slowly and under pressure.

Black absolute "granite" is basalt - and it will never need sealing. Nor a fired-on glaze.

I'm looking forward to learning more about the Lavastone family of fired products. Seems like a product with much promise.

Interesting but I would never get it in blue as the picture shows.

I'm just a granite lover. In fact, we're getting new counter tops in Jan and I'm going with "Dakota Mahagony" granite. I had it in a previous house and I just love it because it's got a very small pattern and not busy or hard on the eye like some granite can be.

It also looks fabulous with cherry cabinets.

I like to look at other types of counters and admire them in other people's homes, but for me it's granite.
