I am thinking of putting a window airconditioner thru a living room wall into an attached garage. I know about piping water out but is there any reason not to do this. I don't want to use any window space and like the idea of a permenant instillation of unit. Thanks for the help.

Your garage won't give the AC unit enough fresh air to exchange the heat. It will make your garage hotter than it is normally because the compressor will be giving off its heat into your garage. It needs to vent to the outdoors.

Yes, the unit needs access to the outside air. The downside to putting a window unit into a wall is the size of the hole needed. Then down the road, when it needs to be replaced, you may have trouble finding one with the exact dimensions to fit that hole.

You might want to check into a "mini-split" or ductless AC system that needs only about a 3-inch opening through the wall. The appearance is nicer, and the condenser will be outside the wall, making for much quieter operation. Here's one example -- Mini-split AC

I completely agree on the mini-split system, a very elegant solution to your problem and some of the bigger units can handle 3 interior units so you can get AC throughout a small home with one unit. They are also available as heat pumps so you could have supplemental heat thru a mini-split system in addition to AC.
