I recently purchased a home built in 1980 and it has ugly square recessed lights in the Livingroom and Kitchen. Has anyone ever tried replacing these and if yes, what type of light? These have "frosted" glass covers so lighting is poor in the kitchen especially.

I was looking at this website about square lighting. Perhaps it will give some inspiration and your will want to keep them. They are quite modern looking in these px.

I have replaced the square recessed lights with modern can lights, but it is a chore. I usually ripped out the old light, and that in itself is a chore. Then I drywalled the opening and cut a round hole for the new can light.

The square can lights in the link Metwo posted look neat but I'm not sure if they would be any easier a job. You would still have to rip out the old light to get it out of the way, as I see it.
