I have a bedroom closet with typical bifold doors. The ceilings are 9 ft and the inside of the closet is the full 9ft. However, because of the limited door height, most of the potential storage space at the top is rendered unusable since I would never be able to get to it.

Does anyone have a "plan" that they used to make a cut out over the top of the closet doors to make a niche for storage?

Pretty easy project for a carpenter. If the doorway has a header then you will not be able to go any lower than the top of the header. You will have to create a floor in the botttom portion of the storage area (ceiling of the closet). Frame out for the rough opening using the wall studs existing in the primary wall and maybe removal of a stud or two in the closet face. Trim out using 3/4" where the doors will be. Make or have made cabinet doors that will correspond to the rough opening.

With the addition of the new ceiling in the closet you will have to finish it off I assume drywall of the new ceiling.

If the closet ceiling is 9', are the top shelves the full depth? It is typical with even an 8' ceiling for the closet top shelves to be only 12" deep at most, even though they are above the door opening. Not easy to get at the top shelves but it can be done with a step stool.
