7/19/08 - I was watching an episode of Rip & Renew this morning (2008- Romantic Bedroom Renovation), and demolition of an "old" popcorn ceiling in a bedroom was part of the transformation. The host mentioned that the ceiling contained harmful materials, and the host and home owners donned Tyvek® suits and dust mask respirators, vents were sealed, and the floor was covered in plastic sheeting.
My first thought was: the ceiling material being removed is asbestos-containing. If so, why were dust masks used? Dust mask respirators are labeled and warn that they do not protect against the inhalation of asbestos fibers. |

I didn't see the show but I would guess they had the ceiling sprayed down with water, this would limit the dust, that's how we take it down anymore, cause EPA has said any contractor who will scrape a surface bigger then 2'x 2' section, homeowners have to be told that if their house was built before 1989 there could be asbestoes and lead base paint in their house. but if the right steps are taken these types of ceiling materials can be removed.

Dust masks aren't rated for sheetrock dust or dry fibers (asbestos). Mr. Frankawitz is very correct about the moisture.
