Hello! Myself and my DH recently purchased a fixer upper in SW MI. We need to replace the floor of the master bathroom and this may be the ideal time to reconfigure that room. The room is 10'6" x 8' and the layout is a bit awkward at the moment with a lot of wasted space.

The entrance to the room is through a standard 3' wide door that opens to the right in to the bathroom. Immediately on the left there is a single vanity (26" of wall space) and to the right there is a small shower stall (34" of wall space). Against the back wall, on the left is a corner jet tub (not sure if this works or not) and on the right is the toilet.

Does anyone have suggestions on rearranging this room? I am open to all suggestions including total removal of the tub. My only wish for this room is to have a nice large walk in shower.

From a plumbing standpoint, you might want to interchange the toilet and shower since a shower and tub usually require the same drain size and both have hot/cold supplies.

BUT realize that moving a toilet means moving the 3" or 4" drain and that can be a major task.

You said the door is 36" and that is larger than usually required. Typically a 30" door is all you need for a bathroom.

The biggest piece of your puzzle is missing - is the bathroom on a slab, above another room, above a basement, or a crawlspace?

Crawlspace and the flooring in there needs to be repaired so it will be all coming up.

We have a plumber who has asked to see some of our thoughts on the repositioning of everything so that he can let us know what would be involved.

That is a similar size to ours and I find our layout comfortable. First I would get rid of the tub unless you really think you will use it (most people don't). Assuming you have a tub elsewhere put a 5' shower along the back wall, with storage at one end. (it will be skinny but perfect for TP, etc). Move the toilet to the side wall (on the end where the storage is) and then the vanity.

Try it on paper and see if it works for you. Your door is placed a bit different so it may not.

I use pre-mixed thin set or mix it myself? This is our only bathroom and in this re-model we are changing fixture locations and really mixing the lay out up. I'm planning on renting a portable potty and thankfully family live close enough for us to shower there for a few days. So in my quote of materials the flooring guy did not give me 1/4" backerboard for the floor. The other "issue" I'm finding is once i pull up the old floor I'm going to be dealing with a 1/2" sub floor. My thought on resolving this issue is to get the 1-1/4" subfloor i will add 1/2UL then 1/4" backerboard then the 3/8" tile. My problem is going to be height though obviously, but I'm thinking I can "shave" the few tiles that will be in the doorway unless the subfloor is showing then maybe a piece of 1/4 round and cut the door? Does my 1-1/4" sub floor include my 1/4" backerboard or should it be 1-1/2 with the backerboard? I have use of a wet saw and I have a dremel tool, along with all my other power tools is there anything specific i should seek out? I hope I'm making sense with these questions..
